They Came, They Saw, Tasted, Then Left?
How do Medium.com content producers think about the number of views versus the average percentage story that is read?
I am so thrilled to have found Medium.com.
I write stories every weekend. My tales reflect my life, work and especially the characters in settings that manifest themselves in my imagination. I am passionate about crafting stories that have the power to move and motivate my fellow humans in inspiring ways.
As the month tick by, I’ve paid attention to how many people view my stories and how many people read my stories.
Interestingly, the stories with a high view level sometimes have rather low percentage-read amounts. It’s like laying eyes on a tantalizing array of food, yet when you take the first bite, it turns out to be unappetizing and disagreeable. I’m altogether sad about that.
I’m still utterly new to the platform, so my overall numbers are low.
Still, I want to understand if there is something I can change about the stories I tell or how I tell them to increase my Read Ratio.
Tell me seasoned Medium writers, how should I be thinking about this? Is there action I must take now? Or does it have nothing to do with me and everything to do with whether my readers are members of Medium.com?
The Numbers

High Read Ratios
Surprisingly, the stories that had a Read Ratio of 100% were viewed by fewer than twenty people.
- The Woman on the Train (1 min)
- Can I Do This? Why Yes! (2 min)

High Number of Views
The stories with the largest number of viewers had ranges of rate rates from 25% to 70%. They were not long — two minutes and four-minute reads.
This data begs the question: what is a typical read rate for articles?
