Medium has a trending section, did you know that? You’ll find an excerpt of that on your homepage. There is also a whole section devoted to popular stories. In this article, however, I want to get into the most trending tags and topics on Medium 2021. Let’s begin!
What’s a tag anyway?
I hope you know. But if you don’t, tags are a key aspect of any Medium story. A tag is basically a topic that you assign to your story. You can choose up to 5. You’ll do that in the top right corner within the Medium editor under “Change tags”.
Why are tags important?
Good question! Hard to answer though, because we’d need to get a little nerdy here. Essentially, tags on Medium are important for two things:
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
- Topics to follow on Medium
Number 1 is true for any type of online writing, not only on Medium. You need tags, or keywords when speaking about blogging in general, to rank high for these on search engines like Google or Bing.
These tags or keywords should clarify and underline the topic (important thing number 2), the main purpose of your content. If you write about Psychology — like one of my favorite Medium gals Larissa Marie Schwarz — you might want to include “Psychology” as a broad tag on your posts. You can and should, of course, include more specific tags as well.
It’s always a good idea to include some trending tags in your posts. Because once you reach a certain viewership in those topics, you might just become a Top Writer on Medium. That’s pretty cool.
Also, Medium members can follow topics, much like you can follow a hashtag on social media. That means, your posts in those highly popular categories have a huge potential readership.

Now let’s get into the nitty-gritty here. What are the most trending tags and topics on Medium 2021? Well, there are plenty. But I think, some of them are on an exponential rise at the moment. So hop on the train and let’s see where it takes us!

- Politics (239,000 followers)
- Life Lessons (227,000 followers)
- Entrepreneurship (205,000 followers)
- Poetry (194,000 followers)
- Health (187,000 followers)
- Business (135,000 followers)
- Self Improvement (134,000 followers)
- Social Media (130,000 followers)
- Art (94,000 followers)
These 10 tags stand out to me in 2021. Of course, there are a lot more with smaller or comparable follower counts. But I think these 10 will keep a steady rise this year and beyond. I’m particularly happy to see tags like “Poetry” and “Self Improvement” here, as they are two of my favorite topics to read.
