Summary

Bill Gates' strategic errors at Microsoft inadvertently facilitated the rise of Amazon, Google, and Apple by failing to adapt to market shifts and user experience improvements.

Abstract

The article discusses five critical mistakes made by Bill Gates that inadvertently paved the way for the success of Amazon, Google, and Apple. These include a lack of political engagement leading to legal challenges, a complex user experience exemplified by the "Ctrl + Alt + Del" command, an inability to scale down Windows OS for compact devices, a delayed entry into the cloud computing market with Azure, and a focus on browser updates over user experience, which allowed Google to dominate the internet space. Despite Microsoft's initial advantages and potential to lead in these areas, these missteps allowed competitors to capitalize on emerging technologies and market demands.

Opinions

  • Microsoft's lack of political engagement is seen as a significant oversight that led to costly legal battles and damaged the company's position.
  • The complexity of Microsoft's "Ctrl + Alt + Del" command is contrasted with Apple's simpler single-key lock function, highlighting a user experience deficiency.
  • Windows OS's bulkiness is criticized for not keeping pace with the trend towards more compact, handheld devices, which Apple's iOS capitalized on.
  • Microsoft's late entry into the cloud computing space with Azure, after AWS and Google Cloud, is viewed as a missed opportunity to lead in a high-margin market.
  • Microsoft's focus on browser updates rather than overall user experience is presented as a key factor in losing the internet technology battle to Google.

These are The 5 Mistakes of Bill Gates That Made Amazon, Google & Apple Successful

If Bill Gates didn’t make these mistakes, Microsoft would’ve been dominated above and captured the markets of Amazon, Apple and Google combined.

5 Mistakes of Bill Gates

Bill Gates was previously developing his company, Microsoft, such that if he succeeded, today we might have seen Microsoft on the top of Amazon (AWS), Apple, and Google’s market.

Note: I compared Microsoft to Amazon’s “AWS” (not to their e-commerce), as it is the most profitable division of the company.

1. Unable to Maintain Political Ties

Bill Gates never involved Microsoft in politics, resulting in bad political ties that led Microsoft to many lawsuits and no one to cover them but Bill Gates himself, who paid huge fines to get rid of them.

The U.S. federal government, many states, and the EU all essentially declared war on Microsoft, and Microsoft paid a devastating priceBrad Silver Berg, Microsoft’s Senior Vice President

2. The Problem With “Ctrl + Alt + Del”

When it comes to user experience, there should be the lowest complexity possible. Microsoft’s famous “Ctrl+Alt+Del” was used to lock the computer, while Apple’s Mac used a single key to do it. Microsoft lost here due to Apple performing the same task in a simplified manner.

3. Windows OS was too Bulky

Windows, the face of Microsoft that made the company billionaire, was only for bulky devices while the tech revolution started and the systems were getting compact. Windows couldn’t be the OS for handheld devices as it was too oversized for that. Later on, Apple’s iOS joined and won the game.

4. Launched Cloud Platform…But Late

Amazon launched its cloud computing platform, AWS, in 2006. AWS is the most profitable division of Amazon due to its high margins. Microsoft’s Azure, announced in 2010, was late to join the feud, as Google Cloud was in action since 2008. Azure managed to beat Google Cloud, but AWS is still the king among these three cloud providers.

5. Focused on Browser Updates Rather Than UX

Microsoft was on the way to conquer internet technology, winning from Netscape until they clashed with Google. Microsoft was constantly updating their browser versions while Google focused on user experience. After that, Microsoft remained the king of personal computers, whereas Google won the internet.
