There’s Something Happening Here, Medium

What it is ain’t exactly clear

Photo by Nadine Shaabana on Unsplash

I’m getting a little discouraged about writing lately, and I don’t think I’m alone. Writers report remarkably lower earnings from the partner program over the past few weeks. There are also reports of fewer views and reads than writers have been accustomed to seeing. I’m in one group, but not the other.

Everybody look what’s going down In the past three weeks, my views and reads have gone way above my averages from previous weeks and months. The average per day has been way up in the past few weeks. Yet I’m discouraged. Though the views and reads went up, my average earnings of around $.50 per day in April dropped to $.08 today. I realize that reads from outside of Medium don’t count, but I’ve also seen a rise in followers that has outpaced other weeks and months.

So what’s happening? My earnings should be rising. Why and how did the algorithm change? Are any writers benefiting more and not wanting to admit it?

Paranoia strikes deep We don’t know. Some think Medium’s compensation levels won’t return to hre they’ve been. Others say that the earnings are only delayed with no word of when they’ll catch up. Some say they’ve emailed Medium and seem happy with an answer to their questions. So what’s the solution? Why should I have to email Medium to ask what’s going on?

I’ve tried the hack of reading more articles, clapping about more, and commenting more. I don’t have hours each day to devote to writing and reading more than I already do, though. It hasn’t appeared to affect my earnings. If it should, how long do I wait for the results?

For what it’s worth I initially said that getting paid for my writing doesn’t matter. I was happy to make a few bangers and mash to at least pay for my monthly subscription, but suddenly I’m on a pace where that isn’t likely to happen. Once you’ve reached a particular pay grade for your effort, you never want to see pay go down as you work harder and produce better measurable results!

So I ask others on Medium, and the Medium Gods (insert angelic “ahhhhh”), what’s going on? Is everyone seeing lower earnings? Is there something else Medium wants from writers, readers, and subscribers? Is there something Medium should do to compensate based on reads outside the platform?

Thanks for reading my story! Here are a few others I hope may interest you.
