There’s More Than One Way to Change the World

Interesting reactions to an inspirational quote

What would the thirteenth-century Persian poet Rumi think of the reaction we got when we quoted him in a Shareable Saturday email?

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” ~ Rumi

Krystal Parker, president of the Central Florida Christian Chamber, observed:

“The ironic thing about this quote is that by focusing on the change within, one can actually make a greater impact on the world.”

Exchange student coordinator Sue Peterson said simply:

“Wonderful wisdom!!!”

But some folks found an element of humor in Rumi’s words.

Mark Goldstein, Central Florida area director with Christian Leadership Concepts, made this prediction:

“Tomorrow I’ll be senile so someone else will have to change me!”

And Kevin W. McCarthy, bestselling author and founder of On-Purpose Partners, said this:

“And wisest of all, I just decided to change my clothes! That’s about the degree of my sphere of control.”

Somehow we doubt that, but it made us chuckle.

We send out Shareable Saturday emails to provide encouragement and inspiration to our online family through a brief quote our readers can reflect on and share — and we are often the ones who are encouraged and inspired. We are grateful for that.
