ILLUMINATION Book Chapters…And It’s A Wonderful Opportunity, For You!

If a window of opportunity appears, don’t pull down the shade. So let me introduce to you, one window of opportunity!

If everyone on Illumination is as excited as I am, this most recent innovation of Dr Mehmet Yildiz should go off like a rocket.

With so many readers and writers, there’s surely amongst us, a percentage of Ernest Hemingway, or Jane Harper (a new Aussie writer), aspirants, waiting with bated breath, not just hoping for success, but also waiting for the door of opportunity to open.

There’s talent amongst us, lots of it, and if we harness this opportunity, who knows where it might take us?

But you know, talent we may have on various levels, but getting a book to publication, to be read by the masses, so that we can write even more in the south of France, or wherever takes your fancy, (ILLUMINATION cares not where you write), can be little more than the stuff of dreams, unless you are prepared for some serious work.

Yet there is huge opportunity here, if we are prepared to go for it…to be at the coalface of such an opportunity, to be seen and valued by a smaller, but meaningful group of people, readers and writers alike, people who value and promote each other, is exciting. You don’t get much of that in the big, bad world.

To be published by a large company is at best, the stuff of dreams, to self-publish on Amazon is wonderful, and within the morass you can be lucky, but the flip side of that is understanding and paying for, things like marketing and book covers. That’s big money we’re talking about!

If you have always wanted to write, here is your opportunity. With a ready-made audience, people prepared to read your efforts, to give advice, and to promote you, is a veritable ILLUMINATION gift, and an opportunity not to be missed.

Having said that, it comes with huge responsibility, that is, to be totally committed to producing the finest product that you can. It challenges us to draft, and re-draft, to put things away in the proverbial drawer, and come back to it later, for rest assured, you will make changes.

It challenges us to play out the drama in our heads, to see ourselves as all the key players in our dreaming, and to practice the roles in some way, in my case, within the confines of my study!

Let me put it this way. I know nobody who can’t find the right language, controlled or otherwise, when they are angry, excited, resentful, or sad. It‘s there in our psyche, ready to be used when the occasion arises, and it’s no different when you are dreaming it up for one of your characters.

I have been writing forever. I’ve written so many poems for all manner of occasions, I’ve written narratives for school musicals, I’ve written drama scenes for school performances, but it wasn’t until I left teaching that I began to write in earnest, just for me (and you!).

Was I hopeful? Of course, and some of my writing I have posted on ILLUMINATION. Getting lovely feedback from Britni Pepper whose writing I so enjoy, not only gave me confidence to try harder, but to be the best writer I could be. That’s not to say it worked, but she did inspire me to improve. Thank you Britni!

And then there’s James Knight, an inspirational writer in his own right. James can take a bow for inspiring me to keep going. He has an uncanny knack for finding rookies, and endorsing them. Thank you James. You helped me to believe in myself. For that I will be ever grateful.

Look writing is not easy! Anything that is worthwhile needs to be worked for. But it gets better the more you try.

Now I just happened to be writing another article about what writing entails, the other day, when Dr Mehmet Yildiz asked if I’d write something about his writing initiative and what writing might entail.

So here is the first part of my as-yet-unpublished article. It’s called:

‘Are You Planning To Write?’

‘So, the idea that many people have about writing is that, you sit down at the keyboard and the words just kinda flow!

‘WRONG!! You’d be extremely lucky if that were the case. Sometimes you sit and not a lot comes to mind, but then, at other times you feel invincible. Words spill onto paper (AKA your laptop), and you’re off at the races. When that happens, make a mental note of how you were feeling. It’s these great times that will inspire you to work through the slogs!

‘Right now I am tutoring a friend’s daughter. Both her parents are lawyers and yet, the one thing their daughter is struggling with, is getting creative thoughts on paper, and risk-taking.

‘She’s a Michelangelo…great at math, art, and technology, so she’s not short on brainpower, but a little intimidated by some aspects of creativity.

‘She’s just thirteen, and though shy, has a whole raft of years ahead of her to build on her skills. One thing I said to her when we met for the first time last week is, that she needs to get away from the idea that only by physically writing, is she writing.

‘Thinking, for instance, is writing.

‘Drawing, is writing.

‘Mulling thoughts in your mind, is writing.

‘Thoughts flying around in your head and trapping them somewhere for reference, is writing.

‘Drama, is writing

‘I knew she was confused.

‘‘You have a smartphone?’ I asked.

‘She did.

‘‘So use it! Every thought that passes your way, however dumb you think it might be, write it down.

‘Use your study as a stage. Play around with scenes. Get your emotive words out, then write them down.

‘If quirky plots jump into your mind, that’s writing.’

When our brains are most relaxed, amazing thoughts can present themselves. Don’t let them run free. They are your thoughts. You can curate them at your leisure. Rest assured, many of them you will use, but some you may discard.

So what am I saying here? Just that writing is hard, and demanding, and not for the fainthearted, and yet, it’s at the same time exciting and exhilarating, and incredible rewarding.

It’s not often a window of opportunity presents itself so graciously, with all the padding of a prized artifact, (read help, understanding and encouragement), so what do you have to lose?

“If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes — then learn how to do it later.”
