Summary

The U.S. Department of Justice special counsel's report on the investigation into President Joe Biden's alleged retention of classified documents has sparked controversy due to its politicized nature and potential impact on Biden's political career.

Abstract

The U.S. Department of Justice special counsel's office recently released a report on the investigation into President Joe Biden's alleged retention of classified documents. The report, written by Special Counsel Robert Hur, implied that Biden willfully retained and disclosed classified materials after his vice presidency but did not recommend criminal charges. However, Hur's report was criticized for its politicized nature, as he editorializes Biden's memory struggles and implies that he declined to charge Biden due to his age. The report has provided ammunition for Republicans to attack Biden's fitness for office, despite Trump's own mental decline and criminal charges for his handling of classified documents. The report has been compared to former FBI Director James Comey's letter castigating Hillary Clinton over her email practices, which some believe contributed to Trump's election.

Opinions

  • The report by Special Counsel Robert Hur is seen as politicized and partisan, with editorializing of Biden's memory struggles and implications that he declined to charge Biden due to his age.

  • The report has been compared to former FBI Director James Comey's letter castigating Hillary Clinton over her email practices, which some believe contributed to Trump's election.
  • The report is seen as a double standard, with Biden not facing criminal charges for his alleged retention of classified documents, while Trump has been charged.
  • The report has been criticized for its potential impact on Biden's political career, with some fearing it could contribute to a repeat of the 2016 election results.
  • The report has been seen as an example of the politicization of the Department of Justice and the criminal justice system.
  • The report has been criticized for its potential impact on the public's trust in the Department of Justice and the criminal justice system.

There Should Be Consequences For Partisan Political Games

A GOP ‘Investigator’ in Biden’s Justice Department just gave Trump and his brownshirt co-conspirators a treasure trove of illegitimate innuendo while clearing him and people are pissed off.

Recently, the U.S. Department of Justice special counsel’s office released its long-awaited report on the investigation into President Joe Biden’s alleged retention of classified documents. The 388-page document (PDF) implies that the special counsel uncovered evidence that Biden willfully retained and disclosed classified materials after his vice presidency but reportedly determined that no criminal charges were warranted.

Biden won’t be facing any criminal repercussions, but thanks to a politicized appointee appointed by former twice-impeached president* Donald J. Trump, an adjudicated fraud, insurrectionist, and rapist who has been indicted four times and is facing 91 felonies — some of which included taking classified evidence — so far, Biden could face political ones.

Special Counsel Robert Hur politicized his report by editorializing that Biden was an octogenarian who struggles to remember basic facts. Hur maliciously wrote that “Biden’s recorded conversations with [his ghostwriter] from 2017 are often painfully slow, with Mr. Biden struggling to remember events and straining at times to read and relay his own notebook entries,” and that “He did not remember when he was vice president, forgetting on the first day of the interview when his term ended (‘if it was 2013 — when did I stop being Vice President?’), and forgetting on the second day of the interview when his term began (‘in 2009, am I still Vice President?’). He did not remember, even within several years, when his son Beau died.”

Hur implied that he declined to charge Biden criminally due in part to his alleged declining memory retention, noting that Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during their interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory. Hur speculated that Biden was someone that many jurors would want to identify as a reasonable doubt based on their direct interactions with and observations of Biden.

It’s Time For ‘Dark Biden’ To Get Pissed Off

For his part, Biden and his White House noted that the ‘inappropriate criticisms of the President’s memory are inaccurate, gratuitous, and wrong.’ Biden further noted that the five hours of in-person interviews he participated in to satisfy the probe occurred on October 8th and 9th of last year at a time when Israel had just been attacked and he was in the middle of handling an international crisis. Despite Biden’s defenses, the damage inflicted by a partisan ‘investigator’ is probably done.

Hur’s partisan posturing has provided a goldmine for Republicans, attempting to revisit and bolster one of Trump’s games he likes to play: claiming that Biden is unfit to serve a second term — regardless of the fact that his own mental decline appears to be far worse than Biden’s.

Many Trump surrogates and allies complained that the Justice Department letting Biden off without criminal charges is a double standard because Trump has been charged over his handling of classified documents, but Hur and his office did elaborate on the differences between the classified document allegations against Biden versus the criminal charges Trump is facing — namely that Biden returned the documents immediately once they were discovered as opposed to Trump doing quite the opposite and obstructing justice and lying about it. In fact, there were multiple differences in how Biden and Trump handled the classified documents:

Many of us still remember October 28, 2016, when former FBI Director James Comer released a letter castigating Hillary Clinton over her email practices despite not recommending charges against her — days before the 2016 election in which she won the popular vote against Trump but still lost the election. Comey’s letter created enough muddiness to make it appear that both candidates were ethically challenged, and it ended up putting the most corrupt president* this country has ever had the displeasure of dealing with in the White House where he proceeded to engage in his four-year crime spree.

Since Hur, who used to work for the Trump administration, politicized his report, many in MAGAland claimed that their treasonous orange leader had been exonerated and that no criminal charges against him are warranted. Here in the real world, nothing could be further from the truth, but once given an opening like the one received from Hur, they will run with it and lie about it every chance they get. Hur has revealed himself to be a proud MAGAt. Hur, like the rest of the Trump supporting MAGAts, is counting on rising anxiety and cynicism to propel Trump’s illegitimate return to the White House, despite the facts that he should legitimately be disqualified, and more importantly, arrested and put behind bars where he belongs.

We’ve Seen This Song And Dance Before

For the record, saying you don’t remember something during a deposition is usually standard operating procedure. For example, Dr. Anthony Fauci reportedly said “I don’t recall” 174 times during a deposition about alleged collusion between the Biden administration and social media platforms, but no one claimed his mental acuity was questionable. Ivanka Trump said “I don’t recall” 30 during the Trump civil fraud trial. Trump, who plays this game constantly, claimed he couldn’t remember something 35 times during his Trump University deposition. The list goes on and on.

As noted by Joe Scarborough from MSNBC, Hur couldn’t indict Biden legally, so he tried to indict Biden politically. Hur isn’t a doctor or a neurologist, so he has no idea what Biden’s mental acuity is. The headline from Hur’s report should have been ‘not indicted’ but because of the partisan games Washington D.C. now plays and the complete corruption of the GOP, we’re faced with another quagmire that never should have occurred in the first place and could — again — end up with a treasonous orange waste of human flesh occupying the White House, despite the fact that he should have been put behind bars long ago.

It’s time for We the People to get pissed about the partisanship games and use issues like this as a lesson. Attorney General Merrick Garland didn’t need to appoint a Republican special counsel or let him release a report that’s filled with right-wing media talking points but he did. Our corporate media should be talking about Trump and his crime sprees and reporting on his plans if and when he ever returns to the White House, not normalizing them. The GOP needs to be recognized as the criminal organization that it is too. Allowing this to happen with total impunity isn’t an option.

Republicans were able to get away with the Hillary Clinton email scandal — most of which wasn’t true — in 2016 because the so-called left never got really angry. We all sat back and let it happen, and this time that’s not an option. Get mad and fight back. Be angry at Hur’s pusillanimous smear of Biden and don’t support the Ministry of Propaganda that supports and spreads Republican lies repeatedly. Demand better. Get pissed off and commit to voting and getting others out to vote too and support your candidates financially if possible. Screw what others think. Allowing a repeat of 2016 would end up destroying what is left of this country once and for all so it’s time to do something about it.
