There Is Still Hope- My Case For America
There is Still Hope. This is my case. After the recent events, this year people are feeling tired, restless. When will it stop? People feel invisible like they aren’t being heard. We hear you!
2020 hasn't been a great year. World wide pandemics, violence, silence, and indifference. As humanity, we have lived through this before and we will again. The black plaque, Vietnam, Boston Tee Party. Our news feed is constantly in our face shoving nightmare and fear.
But this is my case for why we’ll be ok.
Thomas Jefferson during the Declaration of Independence set out what unalienable truths are alive. “ We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights: that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
As a species, we can get confused. We make a lot of mistakes, the decisions. We often turn away from what's uncomfortable. But we also know great strength, our ability to understand others in our communities.
Leaps and bounds, we are far better than 10,20,30 years ago. Now, this isn’t discounting our problems. We have a lot of them. We struggle often with doing the right thing.
But not just here, but a lot of countries around the world as Christians, Jews, and Muslims sitting in the same coffee shop in a completely peaceful atmosphere. Trump and Biden supporters can have a conversation without thought. If someone has a heart attack everyone around them will see if they’re ok or try to help in some other way.
We often feel lonely, invisible, or not heard but there are hotlines, people we know, legal services that are ready to help at a moment's notice.
Life is pretty good. We have buildings made of stone and brick with indoor plumbing and water whenever we want it. There are stores full of food, clothing, and jewelry 30 minutes from our homes. There is a community of people ready to help and back us up when serious injustice has been committed like George Floyd’s. Almost everyone has access to some kind of wifi near them. There are resources out there for the pursuit of happiness if we look for it.
