There Is So Much Inequity In The World Today
Many People Are Hurting
The world today is full of inequities. Money is just one area where people are far from equal. That will always be the case, but perhaps it is time for more people to share. Opposite of the super rich, many people are hurting without even the basic necessities of life. Such inequity is an injustice.
There are over 2,000 billionaires in the world and thousands of multi-millionaires who control more than two hundred million dollars each. It seems totally inequitable that such huge amounts of money are had and hoarded by a small amount of the population when so many people are suffering. Some people have worked very hard for their money. Others have inherited it. Some may have hit a lucky streak which caused them to be highly successful with relatively small effort. Somehow there are extremely wealthy people in the world.
We may wonder: Why don’t they give more? Isn’t it time to give back? There are millions of people who could use a little help, especially now with the global pandemic. Surely it is not that the super rich need all that money or could ever spend it in their lifetimes. Maybe they want to leave it to their family when they die. Some say they will give it all away, but that is not happening. There are people who need help right now and could use some assistance. It is a shame that billionaires and millionaires do not give and help more than they do.
A report on July 5, 2020, stated that the pandemic had tanked some fortunes of billionaires. Forbes counted 2,095 billionaires which is 58 fewer than a year ago and 226 fewer than just 12 days earlier. Of the billionaires who remain, 51% are poorer than they were last year. Basically, the world’s billionaires are worth $8 trillion, down $700 billion from 2019. Why would anyone feel sorry for them? [Forbes Magazine]
During these times of economic crisis due to the spread of Covid-19 throughout the world, it would seem that these mega rich people should be sharing more of their wealth. Although some of them may have established foundations which give away money on a regular basis, perhaps those foundations could do more. This is a time when many ordinary citizens (and especially the poor and homeless) could use some help and would appreciate it.
When people who have 100 million dollars or more donate one million dollars to help others with food during this world-wide crisis, it is commendable. That is a mere drop in the bucket to them, but it can and does help. If more of the billionaires and multi-millionaires would be willing to part with just a little more of their money, many people could benefit. Businesses and livelihoods might be saved to make the world slightly more equitable.
People who wish they were rich often dream of making it big so that they could help others. They have a feeling of wanting to give to the less fortunate. If more people who do have huge amounts of money would reach out to share some of the wealth that they will never need, the world situation could be improved.
A millionaire friend who owns a highly successful business is willing to help others. He said that he has more money than he and his family would ever need. He shares by giving to good causes. There are many people in the world like this person. Some are giving regularly, but some could easily afford to give infinitely more.
It is unbelievable that so few people can control most of the world’s wealth. If more of these super wealthy people would be willing to give back more to help others, more equity might exist. Warren Buffett says he plans to give away his fortune and encourages others to pledge to do the same. He still sits on so much money at his age. There are millions of less fortunate people in the world who could be helped. There are many ways to give a hand up or a hand out. Although a hand out is not always recommended, it might be just what a desperate person needs.
Life is not fair and never has been. Bad things happen to good people, and good things happen to bad people. Seemingly undeserving people sometimes reap huge rewards for little effort. Others work extremely hard and can’t seem to get ahead financially.
It is necessary to just keep trying and believing. A sign a homeless person was holding on a street corner read: HOMELESS BUT NOT HOPELESS. That is a good attitude which most homeless people might not have. Maybe a helping hand would give them the hope to move forward and get out of their sad situation. It might take a lot of helping hands, and maybe we could be one of them.
During World War II, Japanese Americans were placed into American concentration camps in remote areas of the nation. This was done because of racism and hatred. Things seemed hopeless as they lost their freedom and almost everything they owned. They had to endure and keep hoping that things would get better. Almost no one would help them in a desperate situation, but a few people were kind. If someone tries to help, it gives hope.
If you are a “normal” person who is not a billionaire or millionaire, you might think you cannot help others. When we consider that an average American spending $1 might compare to a billionaire spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, life does seem inequitable. You don’t have to be among the world’s richest people to help others in some small way.
Stay safe and look to better days. Share and help others if you can. We can likely all help those who are less fortunate in some way. Everyone can do something. Being kind and giving makes a person feel good while helping others.
