ts customers, the hundreds of writers and editors of Illumination, along with its thousands of readers, and to wipe out the existence of its leader, is one of the most egregious failures I have ever experienced. So far as I am aware, Medium provided zero communication other than a simple error message received by some of us.</p><p id="ab09">Now, please don’t get me wrong, I like and appreciate Medium and the opportunity it presents to all of us who love to write. It provides a platform and structure that is reasonably well thought out. My experience with Medium had been overwhelmingly positive until yesterday morning.</p><p id="51e3">The fact that the Illustration publication was back online before the end of the day indicates Medium corrected its error, <b>effectively admitting to its mistake.</b></p><p id="dea9">However, the lack of communication was highly disrespectful to all of us as paying customers. Not a peep from anyone at Medium as to what happened and how it will be prevented in the future. There Is No Room for Communication Failures at the Top

A Critical lesson in leadership

A not so normal day

Yesterday morning in my normal routine, I went online to check my Medium account. Much to my surprise, I found all my articles published in Illumination were no longer in the publication! In fact, Illumination had vanished, completely wiped from existence!

I immediately searched for Dr. Mehmet Yildiz, the founder of Illumination — every reference to him had also mysteriously disappeared! To my shock, not a trace of him or the publication was to be found anywhere on Medium. Having joined the Illumination publication at the invite of the good Dr. about a month ago, posting an article practically every day, I was stunned at the silence!

Having retired from the corporate world, serving as President and CEO of a couple of multi-hundred million dollar enterprises, as well as serving as a top-level executive in a couple of multinational multi-billion dollar organizations, I’ve experienced first-hand the effects of both good and poor leadership practices. I have found one of the most critical leadership practices, listed near the top of any list of leadership skills is that of communication. A failure in this area is unconscionable.

Contrasting Leadership Styles

Since founding the Illumination publication Dr. Yildiz has continuously displayed remarkable leadership qualities, chief among them his excellent communication skills with the hundreds of writers and editors on Illumination. In my opinion, Dr. Yildiz is an outstanding leader by any measurement.

In contrast to the good Dr.’s excellent leadership, Medium displayed a remarkable leadership failure yesterday. To completely ignore its customers, the hundreds of writers and editors of Illumination, along with its thousands of readers, and to wipe out the existence of its leader, is one of the most egregious failures I have ever experienced. So far as I am aware, Medium provided zero communication other than a simple error message received by some of us.
