There is Always Something to be Grateful For
Thankful for my son’s quick recovery from COVID
Last month, I received a call from my son’s school.
The school nurse’s message said, “Please come to pick up your son from school, he is complaining of a headache and an upset stomach”.
With those words, I just knew it was COVID.
Somehow my child had been exposed at his place of learning.
Before the school year began, we contemplated doing homeschooling. I did not want him exposed, but I understood that he missed his friends and when I asked he said he wanted to return to school.
It was a chance we had to take.
I prayed the vaccine would be approved soon before he got infected.
No one at his school wears a mask, no employees, and maybe only 15% of the students.
Though I work in healthcare and I am fully vaccinated, I take all the precautions I can at work so I reduce my chances of bringing anything home.
Since COVID began, here are a few precautions I take: —
- He wears a mask to school.
- He carries hand sanitizer.
- He carries his own water so he should not have to use the fountain.
- I wear a head covering while at work.
- I take them off before going indoors and leave them in the trunk, where my kids don’t use or have cause to go to.
- Disinfected wipes in the car that we all use regularly.
- Do not let anyone at home touch me before I change clothes and take a bath.
Irrespective of all our hard work, my baby got infected with COVID.
He suffered from headaches, an upset stomach, and a terribly stuffy nose for about three days. He also complained of a sore throat and reduced appetite.
I was off work for the 10 days of his quarantine and we lived in the one-room together.
I kept all the windows open at all times.
My daughter (17) cautioned me that I could catch COVID. I explained to her that I was a mother and she was a daughter and due to this fact I could never leave my baby when he needed me.
Even at the risk of being infected again, I would do the same for any one of them.
The days passed with me checking on him during the nights, I hardly slept.
Each day we would take several 15-minute breaks to go in the backyard for some sunlight.
Finally, my Snooky felt well and returned to school.
Concluding thoughts
I am so thankful that my baby has recovered from COVID.
When I hear all the stories of people suffering from long COVID I feel truly blessed.
We are the only two in the family to have had this evil befall us.
Why — I have no theories.
But we will use this sickness as a way to learn, grow and strengthen our lives and the lives of others.
At the time there was another child who had COVID and was hospitalized with the recommendation to amputate all his limbs. He ultimately died.
I felt that mother’s pain, and I am doubly thankful for the life and complete recovery of my son.
It is with a thankful heart that I write this post.
