There Aren’t Many Downsides to the Medium Contest
Some people don’t much like the contest and I’m not sure why.
I’ve noticed there seems to be a decent amount of controversy about the Medium contests. I don’t really understand why. It seems like a contest like any other. We even still have the ability to get regular views, reads and the like from any story we submit to the contest. So, what’s the problem?
I said I wasn’t sure why people weren’t fans, but I actually have a few ideas. There was an issue about copyright that some people weren’t very happy about. Medium responded fairly quickly and changed a few things. I think the issue was that Medium could make money off of our stories without any kind of compensation. They could do whatever they wanted with it.
I don’t really see this as much of an issue as it’s basically the kind of agreement you’d see in pretty much any contest like this. People were talking about them being able to make movies and the like, but let’s be real. They would use these stories for marketing purposes and that’s pretty much it.
Another issue, perhaps the main issue, is that a lot of people view these contests as Medium replacing the bonuses that many had come to appreciate. Of course, as many people have pointed out, the bonuses were just that, bonuses. They were never intended to be here to stay. The new creator program is what’s replacing the bonuses if anything. I’m not a fan of that very much, which you can read about here.
In my mind, I see this contest as basically a prompt on some things to write from Medium that some people will get paid for. We’ll still get our usual interactions, and we aren’t going to lose access to that. If you don’t want to compete, to post a story based on those prompts, don’t.
If you’re complaint has to do with losing money in the form of bonuses, it sounds like the conversation should be more about how we can figure out to pay writers better. We should also look at how to make Medium profitable since it apparently isn’t.
Well, that’s my piece. What do you guys think? Did I missrepresent people here? Did I miss some arguments? Maybe you think I’m grossly simplifying the whole situation. I’d love to hear your opinions!
