Summary

Portugal's coast is home to over 200 species of sharks, with occasional sightings of typically dangerous species like the white giant, attributed to rising water temperatures affecting their migration patterns.

Abstract

The Portuguese coast is teeming with shark diversity, hosting over 200 species, which is more than commonly recognized. While the public often associates sharks with notorious species like the great white, hammerhead, and tiger sharks, the reality is that there is a much broader spectrum of shark species present. The article reflects on a personal experience of watching a documentary on shark attacks in California, which led to musings about the potential presence of such predators on Portuguese beaches. Although dangerous sharks are not typically found near Portuguese shores, there have been rare instances of great whites and orcas being spotted, with the latter being a formidable ocean predator. These sightings are linked to the warming of ocean waters, which may cause sharks to lose their usual migratory routes and appear in unexpected areas. Despite the fear they may evoke, sharks are acknowledged as ancient creatures that have evolved over thousands of years, descendants of the prehistoric megalodon.

There are more than 200 species of sharks on the Portuguese coast, more than those I thought existed. When we talk about sharks we think of the giant white shark, the hammerhead shark, bulldog, and tiger, but in fact, there is a wide variety of sharks.

Yesterday I found myself watching a documentary about shark attacks in California and found myself thinking about the times I went to the beach here in Portugal and wondered if There was a shark like that around me all of a sudden.

I think I died of my heart.

On Portuguese beaches, there are not those considered dangerous sharks, but a white giant has been caught in fishing boats on one of the beaches of Sesimbra and has already spotted a killer Orca.

Although not a shark but is also a mega predator.

This appearance of the white giant is due to the warming of the water temperature and these animals begin to lose their sense of orientation, eventually heading to beaches and places where they have never been sighted.

Despite being frightening to humans, sharks are part of the oldest animals on our planet, having evolved for thousands of years, descended from the megalodon, one of the largest predators of the oceans in antiquity.
