There Are Days When Writing Isn’t The Right Coping Skill

a poem and a time to confront my reliance on writing

Photo by Katrin Hauf on Unsplash

I know, I know, I love to write about writing and how that in writing I heal the best.

But there are days when writing is not the right coping skill.

Writing is powerful for making meaning out of a set of experiences that feel chaotic, laying structure and purpose to help move forward.

But when emotions are raw and you continue to exist within something that is ringing alarm bells, to push someone to process before they are able to feel, that is cruel.

It sets their healing on your agenda.

I separated myself from my own thoughts and poem in shifting between “I/me” pronouns, to some abstract “they”,

when what I mean, really, is to say,

stop pushing me forward at your pace at the cost of my own.
