Summary

Abstract

The poem "A Poem of Old Favors" by KS Hernandez delves into the theme of transformation through the metaphor of fragrance, comparing life's journey to the cycles of nature, such as the sweet decay of honeysuckle and the rebirth of flowers from rot. The author ponders on the bittersweet nature of experiences, the release of creative energy in adversity, and the unyielding nature of hope. The poem concludes with a surrender to destiny, embracing the beauty that emerges from life's decompositions. This work is a creative response to Lucy Dan's poetry prompt to use a metaphor to describe one's current situation, emphasizing the unexpected sources of nourishment and strength.

A Poem of Old Favors

Nourishment in unexpected places.

Will your fragrance be as sweet as decayed honeysuckle — life plucked for pleasure

Will your fragrance be the acrid bump on the tongue or gracious release flexed creative muscles formed in exquisite heat?

Will your fragrance be the reluctant tears of men who don’t cry of hope that won’t die

I surrender to the arms of my destiny — where rot blooms flowers rebirth, joy, granted grace are showers.
