A muffled sound came back, and I advanced into the shaft.

With the surround sound from the baseball game, I was sure the Steroid men could not hear me. –This time, for sure, a baseball game was a perfect distraction! Did I have time? Did I even know if it was Willoby?

“Willoby,” I called…if that is, you tap three times.

There were three steady taps.

My heart wanted to fly out of my chest with joy and fear. I quickly examined the cart to see if there were any tools. I had to be fast because Joan would probably open the door again in a half-an-hour.

No tools.

I pulled the sturdy hairpins from my hair and got on my knees. The vent wasn’t securely bolted, just lightly held together with a couple of screws. It would take someone searching for something to notice. I used one of the large hairpins I’d pulled from my hair to open the vent screws. The shaft was pitch black. “Willoby, are you there?”

A muffled sound came back, and I advanced into the shaft. I felt around in the darkness and touched something.

It felt like a rope, so I pulled it towards me. Then I used my hands to examine what was in front of me that I couldn’t see.

My hand touched another hand!

Hope gave me strength. So, I pulled back away from the shaft, pulling what I found with me. It was Willoby!

He was tied up and bundled like a package ready for pick up by FedEx!

Thank you for reading this piece. I hope you enjoy it and will savor more from some inspiring writers on this platform.
