The Writing on the Wall

What Do We Do Next?

That I write for myself is a given. That I sometimes write for other people also happens. In these early days of major changes at Medium after August 1, 2023, I think it might be important to write in support of all of the writers here at Medium.

If you are like me and don’t normally earn very much, any uptick in what we earn will be good. If you are like so many other writers here who have already shown great promise with lots of followers, lots of attention, and, more importantly, lots of money earned, I hope you are able to maintain at least what you had before the change. In reading articles this morning about your reactions, I feel for you.

I want things for all of us to be more comfortable. If a person is worried about where their future is going, it is harder to concentrate on the here and now. Medium, obviously, has taken a swerve from what they had anticipated in these changes, but these are early days. I’m sure they realize there’s been a mistake or are prepared to fine-tune things. Quickly, too, I hope.

It is the people who have experienced major changes in their stats which should be the loudest among us right now. Word must get back to @TonyStubblebine so he knows how we, as writers for Medium, are experiencing these changes.

My father told me that the one thing you never mess with is somebody else’s money. These changes at Medium appear to have impacted the earnings of all writers at Medium. If, in cases, like my own, my earnings have gone up a bit, it is not as much of an impact as it is for a writer who, before the change, was earning $2,000 a month. I don’t know how many of these writers we have, though I have read of some of them today, and I am sorry for that. This is rent money, folks. This is grocery money we’re talking about. This is health insurance. If we were in a union, I’m sure somebody would be up there in somebody else’s face talking a blue streak.

Otherwise, what do you do? You make your objections and observations known. You continue to write wherever you end up writing, even if it might no longer be at Medium all the time. Perhaps, this is the writing on the wall that leads you to other avenues of publishing. Perhaps, you elect to stick it out. It’s got to get better, doesn’t it?
