The Would-Be-King

An original poem of outrage

The Would-Be-King Cried, “Hoax,” and laughed

Some laughed with him A part of the cult Others rolled their eyes While still others ignored

But no one believed He would put his own people in jeopardy To retain his position At the top of the great white hill Not daring to risk economic prosperity Or the power he perceived he had

By the time his lie came to light He’d surrounded himself with impenetrable walls Bolted his doors And barred reality from entering Saying, at the same time “It’s really not so bad” And “You’re on your own”

As the long, dark, endless night began The sound of laughter Could still be heard From within his safe, locked world As the rest the planet burned To the ground
