The world is bad, but goodness is everywhere

Appreciate the goodness around you

We never cease to rave and rant against the unfairness of life. We generalize about how bad the world is. We complain about the dearth of good and the flourishing of evil and wickedness.

There are good people everywhere. We miss seeing the good people around us because we have failed to appreciate what goodness is. Our ignorance of goodness makes good people invisible to us.

“You meet saints everywhere. They can be anywhere. They are people behaving decently in an indecent society.” (Kurt Vonnegut, American author)

What is goodness?

Goodness is not about holiness or saintliness. Moral objectivity is a disputed concept, but no one can deny that there are universal values that represent goodness.

“Goodness is about character — integrity, honesty, kindness, generosity, moral courage, and the like. More than anything else, it is about how we treat others.”

(Dennis Prager, American radio host)

Modern life is competitive, fast-paced, and stressful. In our daily lives, we interact with hundreds of people. Can anybody say they treat all the people they meet in their daily lives with courtesy, kindness, and patience?

We may be polite with our bosses and friendly with our colleagues and loving towards our close relationships. But our behavior towards strangers may not be exactly exemplary or uniformly good. We may say thanks if somebody does a favor. We may smile if somebody smiles at us.

How do good people stand out?

Good people are consistently kind, courteous, patient, and virtuous. You can spot them smiling at strangers, being very considerate to fellow drivers on public roads, standing patiently in grocery line queues, and going out of the way to help strangers.

They don’t shout back if somebody talks rudely to them. They speak in soft and friendly tones. They don’t gossip or speak ill of others. Speak no ill, do no harm to others is their motto.

Good souls are consistently virtuous whereas many of us are episodically and opportunistically virtuous.

When we help others, we expect reciprocal favors from them. The good people, however, help even those who may not return the favor.

They don’t hesitate to apologize in case they have caused inconvenience to others.

Good persons treat lesser creatures like animals with compassion.

Good people go beyond the call of duty. For them, work is worship. The medical professionals and health workers who are battling the COVID-19 pandemic are goodness personified. They have risked their lives to save the entire society from the pandemic.

Is goodness difficult to practice?

“Each person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If he listens to it and acts on it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most. It is not complicated, but it takes courage. It takes courage for a person to listen to his own goodness and act on it.”

(Pablo Casals, Spanish composer and cellist)

We must consciously cultivate goodness so it becomes our default nature in all kinds of situations. A society that values intelligence and smartness over virtuous behavior is doomed to wallow in moral chaos. We must learn to value goodness and respect good people.

“No one can be good for long if goodness is not in good demand.”

( Bertolt Brecht, German playright)

Once it is appreciated, encouraged, and exalted, goodness has the power to cause ripples of transformation in society.

“The fragrance of flowers spreads only in the direction of the wind. But the goodness of a person spreads in all directions.”

( Chanakya, Indian statesman)

A society gets the goodness it deserves

We teach our children how to succeed in life, we don’t teach them good values. The fixation with material prosperity has created a moral vacuum where unethical behavior is no longer a taboo.

Children pick up their moral lessons from home. Parents should be role models in uprightness and conscientiousness.

“Be the reason, someone believes in the goodness of others.”

(Anonymous )

Moral cynicism will undermine society’s moral fiber. An ethically corrupt society will meet its nemesis in the form of social disorder and political disintegration.

In a world transformed by the coronavirus pandemic, every little act of kindness will make a significant impact on the devastated lives of millions of people.

Nature has reclaimed her balance by inflicting suffering on the hubristic human species. The lesson for humanity is to acquire less, consume less, care more for the collective good, and spread goodness to all living beings.
