The World Has Become A Dicken’s Novel
A Tale of Two Cities
I don't understand it. The economy is in shambles, but jobs are aplenty. The stock market and cryptocurrency have been spiraling down since March of this year, but the Dow Jones posted its greatest gain since 2020 the other day. The Dow surged 1200 points. With the world in so much turmoil and enturbulation, I’m reminded of the famous line in Charles Dicken’s, “A Tale of Two Cities.”
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way. . . .
If ever a time to believe that the Apocalypse was upon us, it has to be now. Disease, war, famine, and economic collapse are all on the agenda for the year 2022. Covid hit the world and we had no vaccine. Then we had a breakthrough with the mRNA vaccine, a new technology for developing new vaccines in a fraction of the time. Debate surged among many naysayers. Is the new vaccine safe? Should we give it to our children? What are the long-term effects? Scientists and governments reassured us, but we had to take their word that the vaccines were safe. But as soon as we start to breathe a sigh of relief, a new variant emerges. Delta appears then it's replaced by omicron. Omicron starts to wane over the summer and then omicron unleashes its offsprings. Scientists warn us that more offsprings are on the way so keep wearing your mask. I can’t remember them all; BA.5, BQ.1, BQ.1.1, BA.4.6, BF.7 just to name a few. Did someone morph together all the B vitamins with all the Windows updates? I can’t keep them straight.
The war rages between Russia and Ukraine. The world is rooting for the underdog. But I’m not so sure that Ukraine is an underdog. It seems that Ukraine is winning. Ukraine is beating Russia. A country that arguably was considered the number two super-power of the world for the past sixty to seventy years. Has Putin lost his MoJo? Is the end in sight? Will Putin go nuclear on Ukraine and the world? Will Ukraine win the war soon?
The war sent oil and gas prices through the roof. Oil and gas have come down a bit, but winter’s frost is upon us. Will fuel prices stay low? Will there be enough? Will Russia start blowing up other pipelines to spite the EU and NATO for its military support to Ukraine?
World food supplies are in jeopardy. Ukraine exports 12% of the world’s wheat supply, 17% of the world’s Barley supply, 12% of the world’s corn supply, and 45–50% of the world’s sunflower seed supply for sunflower oil. Many African and Asian countries, Egypt, Indonesia, and Turkey to name a few, are dependent on Ukrainian wheat. China and the EU import corn from Ukraine. The world has seen rising commodity prices. Will food prices go sky-high this winter? How many more people will die from famine? We all pray for the war to end, but has the war harmed this year’s harvest?
I can only console myself with the words of my grandmother. She used to tell me when times were difficult for us,“ My dear boy, as long as one person prays for the world each day, God will never forsake us. Believe me.”
