Summary

A man grapples with his need for love by repeatedly questioning his imaginary friend, ultimately realizing that the friend's presence was an answer to his quest for affection.

Abstract

The narrative centers on a person with an imaginary friend who becomes a source of solace during times of emotional distress. The protagonist habitually summons this friend, seeking an answer to the question, "Where do you go when you need love?" Despite the friend's consistent silence and tendency to disappear upon being touched, the protagonist's desperation escalates to the point of shouting in anger and despair. It is only when the imaginary friend gently reminds him of his constant companionship that the protagonist understands love was present all along in the friend's steadfastness.

Opinions

  • The protagonist views his imaginary friend as a tangible source of emotional support, despite the friend's intangibility.
  • The protagonist's reliance on alcohol, substances, and suicidal thoughts indicates a deep sense of emotional void and unmet need for love.
  • The imaginary friend is portrayed as a patient and caring entity, providing comfort without verbal affirmation.
  • The climax of the protagonist's emotional turmoil is marked by his aggressive demand for an answer, reflecting a crisis of self and need for validation.
  • The resolution suggests that love can be found in non-traditional forms of companionship, and that sometimes, the answers we seek are found in the presence of those who stay by our side silently.

The Wise Imaginary Friend

Where do you go when you need love?

I had this imaginary friend, I was always summoning him up. I used to ask him “Where do you go when you need love?” He would never reply, he was just sitting there, wiping out my tears and watching me filling myself with alcohol, substances, suicidal thoughts.

As I was drinking and crying, I was asking him again, with more anger this time. “Where do you go when you need love? ANSWER ME!” He was smiling in silence and, every time I was trying to touch him, he would simply vanish.

I was going insane, almost delusional and now, I was shouting at him like a madman. “Where the fuck do you go when you need love?!” He couldn’t bear my destruction, my questions. As he got closer, wiped my last tear, and whispered: “Every time you asked this question, I was here, by your side, where do you think?”.
