The Windiest City

Why I Loved Living In Chicago

Best City in America

The couple of years I lived in Chicago were some of the best years of my life. This city has everything and anything for almost everyone to do.

Not So Windy

The city doesn’t actually get as windy in most parts as the nickname, “Windy City,” would suggest. The winds are actually on average right around 10–12 miles per hour. Sure, it can get high winds especially right on the lakefront during a storm as my partner and I experienced when an umbrella was forced out of our hands.

Blend of Cultures

The thing I truly loved about the city is that it was a blend of cultures from all over the world. It is truly the cosmopolitan metropolitan. Just within the neighborhood that I last lived in, Albany Park, there were more different types of cuisines and restaurants in that neighborhood than in any other city I had lived in combined. We had a few Middle Eastern places, a few different Latin American cuisines, and a few different Asian cuisines including my own, Filipino, within a 10-minute walk of our apartment. It was like walking through a cultural tapestry.

Albany Park, Diverse Neighborhood

I found out later after I had looked up the demographics of our neighborhood that it was the most culturally diverse zip code in the entire Midwestern United States, 60625. Public transportation from where we lived was convenient and frequent. I never had to worry about being late to work or going somewhere downtown. Downtown was only 30 minutes by train on the Brown Line.

Easily Accessible City

Famous sites like the Bean, Grant Park, Millennium Park, Navy Pier, the Art Museum, and the many beaches were easily accessible by transit. One thing many people outside of Chicago do not know is that Chicago has a multitude of beaches and forests to visit for those who love the outdoors. In the summertime, my partner and I would frequent Hollywood Beach, also known as Kathy Osterman Beach. It is a gay-friendly beach on the North Side of the city just about 5–7 miles north of downtown.

Forested City

The forests were great for outdoor adventures as well as we could take our box truck and drive through and explore them and also pay a camping fee to camp at the many campgrounds throughout the entirety of Cook County. Chicago is the most forested urban city in the United States and it shows. There is so much wildlife to see in the area and there are even hiking trails and parks for people to enjoy while enjoying the beautiful weather for most of the year. I just wouldn’t recommend going there in the winter.

Diverse Landscape

In a city of nearly 3 million with a metropolitan area of roughly 10–12 million, Chicago’s landscape is diverse, beautiful, and massive. I found myself going to the many outdoor events, cultural festivals, and enjoying and celebrating the city’s rich history while living there.

I Had To Leave and Some Advice

I’m so sad that I had to leave. The one drawback of living in Chicago is that it got really expensive and like any other big city it was too crowded. There was literally a fight for every parking spot, especially near our old apartment. I would recommend to anyone thinking about moving to the city to rely on public transportation, which is great and runs 24/7, and do not own a car especially if you’re going to live in the city proper.

Just Don’t Own A Car

Even owning a car in the suburbs can be awkward because many 10 mile commutes can take over an hour to complete. Chicago is known for some of the worst traffic in the entire United States. I think another reason this happens is that the city wasn’t built with the traffic and freeway infrastructure in mind first. That’s why it can take people sometimes nearly a few hours just to get across the vast metropolitan area. I’ve had many truck drivers tell me that they have to get to Chicago bright and early just to get in on time for deliveries.

Deep Dish Is The Best

As I mentioned earlier, Chicago is world-famous for its delicious food. Probably the most iconic dish from Chicago is the deep dish Chicago-style pizza, pictured above. It’s definitely more like a casserole-style pizza and is very heavy with cheese, sauce, and sausage. Lou Malnati’s is the best place in town to get the iconic style pizza. It’s like a flavor explosion in your mouth.

More Delicious Food

I know New Yorkers will claim they have the best pizza in the world but Chicago hands down for me has them beat, and it’s not even close. Chicago is also famous for its Italian Beef, which is a french dipped hoagie with shredded beef, giardiniera, and the classic dip. It was invented by Italian-Americans who had settled in the Chicago Area.

No Ketchup on a Chicago Dog

Who can also forget that the Chicago-style hot dog is also a popular iconic dish that must be consumed without ketchup? It is literally a sin to consume a Chicago dog with ketchup. Ask anyone from Chicago. I learned that lesson quickly. The relish is very bright green and stands out from other styles of hot dogs anywhere in the world.

Thinking Back Fondly

I absolutely love and miss this city and hope to move back there someday if I can afford it. I can’t stand to be in such a backward and tiny city that has not much to offer. I really do miss the hustle and bustle of the city juxtaposed with the serene natural beauty. This is coupled with the fact that it has the best food in the entire country and no one can say otherwise. They literally do every cuisine correctly and I can still taste the city even just thinking about it. I miss and love you, Chicago, Illinois.
