Summarize

The wind from the star drove shards of the crumbled planet everywhere. Nothing remained that its former inhabitants could have recognized. Some fell toward oblivion in the star, more became an orbiting belt. One massive chunk became the moon of another planet.

One fragment shot away fast enough to escape the heliosphere and beyond. It travelled for 3 billion years and more. Had it been able to communicate, what sights it saw! What stories it could tell!

Eventually, it arrived at our solar system. Jupiter’s gravity bent it towards Earth, where it burned up in the atmosphere early one morning, unseen only for a girl in Nauru. She wished on it for her father to get better. His oncologist was brilliant and she saved his life. But the little girl’s memory of a shooting star saving her father was the last memory of a planet destroyed 3 billion years before.
