Summary

"The Wild Wind that Whirled & Twirled a Great Commotion" is a poetic narrative about survival, nature's forces, and the beauty of patience and timing, observed through the experiences of cormorants and a cat named Lady Donga by the ocean.

Abstract

The narrative titled "The Wild Wind that Whirled & Twirled a Great Commotion" unfolds a tale of nature's raw power and the resilience of its inhabitants, as depicted through the eyes of Lady Donga, a pussycat, and the cormorants she observes. The wind, likened to a wounded whale and the howling of bearded humans with malicious intent, serves as a metaphor for the challenges faced by these creatures. The cormorants' struggle to take flight in the fierce wind and the eventual success of Connie, a cormorant, symbolize the themes of impermanence and the importance of choosing the right moment to act. The story is complemented by evocative images and a YouTube video, and it concludes with a nod to Lady Donga's appreciation for support from her readers, inviting them to buy her a coffee, as well as a plug for New Leaf Connect, a service offering experiences in Dongara and the Midwest.

Opinions

  • The author, Lady Donga, uses vivid and emotional language to convey the intensity of the wind, comparing its sound to that of a wounded whale and the relentless pursuit of ill-intentioned humans.
  • There is a clear empathy for the natural world, particularly for the cormorants who struggle against the wind and the mermaids whose plight is symbolized by their cries from the ocean depths.
  • The narrative suggests a critique of human exploitation of nature, as indicated by the reference to the lust for blubber and oil, and the desire to kill.
  • Patience and timing are highlighted as virtues, as seen in the cormorants' wait for the right moment to take flight, which is presented as a life lesson.
  • The author expresses a harmonious relationship with nature, as Lady Donga and her human companion, Seaspray D, watch the weather and the birds in a state of relaxation and observation.
  • The piece concludes with a message of gratitude and community, inviting readers to show their support for the author's work through a "buy me a coffee" link and promoting a local tour service.

We sat and watched the cormorants try to take off into the wind

The wind howled like a wounded whale — who had been de-finned

Chased around by bearded humans — whose intentions were ill

Ill-intentioned in their lust for blubber and oil — their desire to kill

Another cormorant takes of into the wind along the river

As it leaves the river water its wings begin to shake and quiver

The wind is gusting ferocious now — at 100 miles an hour

But shortly mother nature’s whirlwind lashing tongues devour

This pissing into the wind — translates as a waste of time

The bird gives up, finds a sheltered branch — to rest its rhyme

Myriad white capped horses dance about on top of the ocean

The wind has stirred it vigorously — now a witches potion

The witches potion of this sea of foam that spares no sailor

To be caught far from shore in this foamy sea would be a failure

A failure to read the signs and to hear the siren

Wherein from the ocean depths and on the reefs the mermaids cry on

Meanwhile back on land and down beside the river

My human Seaspray D and I relax and watch the weather dither

Is there a pause in this relentless wild and dangerous breeze?

Perhaps there is as mother nature pays heed to pleas from trees

Pleas from the birds wanting to take off towards the sky

Because they do — they don’t have to give a reason why

Finally Connie the Cormorant spreads her magical majestic wings

And into the blue sky far above her flapping sings

Her flaps sing a song of impermanence, patience, and let’s wait and see

And choose a time in life to make our break and then be free

MeoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooW for now

Until next time
