The Wild Wild West….of Ireland!

Achill Island, Connemara and The Wild Atlantic Way — a Poem/Blog (Plog) 😜

Keem Beach, Achill Island, Ireland (Image: © Author’s Own, All Rights Reserved)

The Wild Atlantic Way

My privileged western view Surveys your weathered wintered vistas Battered and whipped into majesty.

Where sheep still wander freely Asserting their stronghold by the ocean Steep slippery rocks their jagged highway.

Familial small-windowed stone cottages Now sit ruined and empty — doors wide open Their once fiery turf-fueled hearths long cold.

Forgotten outcrops of distant times Slowly melting back into the bogs they hailed from Camouflaged in nature’s gentle arms.

The Wild Atlantic Way.

The image above of two ewes sitting huddled contentedly together atop a cliff edge is one of my favourite views in Ireland — certainly my favourite photo from our 4-day tour of Connemara — and was taken just before we travelled down the narrow, steep, winding road that leads to Keem Bay Beach.

Standing there arm-in-arm on Keem beach with my husband on what was a cold, but bright and fresh October morning, I reminisced back to the last time I had stood in this spot — it was 13 years previous when our boys were aged just six and two.

Looking around me I could see that not much, if indeed anything at all, had changed one iota. It was still perfect. The sound of the rushing waves, the bright sands, a lonesome seal that kept bobbing up into view, a couple of brave kayakers, the stunning views, all culminated in a perfect moment of serenity.
