Summary

The text is a satirical take on the political climate in the week leading up to the U.S. Election Day, reflecting the anticipation and chaos of the electoral process.

Abstract

In the week before the election, the atmosphere is tense and filled with political fervor. Pundits and pollsters are busy making predictions, while the constant barrage of political ads and debates leaves the public overwhelmed. The author humorously likens the situation to a bustling house on Christmas Eve, with adults anxiously following the news and children left confused by the commotion. Amidst the noise, there's a yearning for unity and a call to action for citizens to vote and shape the future of the country.

Opinions

  • The author expresses frustration with the political process, indicated by the desire to escape to a peaceful location like Nice, France.
  • There is a clear critique of the media's role in amplifying political divisions, as suggested by the description of "talking heads all exploding with vermin" and their "vitriol."
  • The piece satirizes the partisan nature of politics, with mentions of various political figures and the polarizing rhetoric surrounding them.
  • The author conveys a sense of urgency and responsibility for citizens to participate in the electoral process, emphasizing the importance of voting as a means to potentially heal the country's divisions.

The Week Before Election Day

Twas the Week Before Election Day

And all through the virtual house

All the creatures were stirring,

They all used their mouse!

The pollsters and pundits predicted with care,

In hopes that their candidate would get all the air!

The children wondered why the adults ran to their beds

When the emails rattled and darn near hurt their heads.

I turned off my computer in search of some peace

And dreamed of the day I could run off to Nice (you know, in France… needed a rhyme here).

Then out on the tv there arose such a clatter

I sprang from my couch to see what was the matter.

I saw the talking heads all exploding with vermin

Their vitriol left me with so much yearning.

On Democrats, on Republicans, on Green Party too!

Vote Trump, Vote Biden, remember Benghazi who?

McConnell must go, no he must stay,

What about Cornyn, and Graham and Collins, hey hey!

I turned off the tv to call it a night

and wondered if I could get a respite.

Election Day was next week and the ads would all end

But who would win and would the country break or bend?

I looked for the end to this story when it occurred to me

“Get out and Vote!” and save our country.
