The War on Gender Is In Canada

And, it really is a war and progressives are losing the battle

In the tumultuous landscape of contemporary politics, one of the most alarming battlegrounds is the war on gender. Why am I writing this? Well, the Premier of Alberta, Canada has declared war on individual rights when it comes to gender. Danielle Smith has taken authority away from individuals and parents under the guise of “caring for children.”

She is a libertarian populist and her move had an immediate and supportive response from the Conservative Party of Canada leader, Pierre Poilievre. Just an aside, both of them have changed their birth names, something they want to deny to all children.

This week the issue was gender-affirmation. Already, the issue of a woman’s control of her own body in underway in Alberta. Abortion is the next target.

Spearheaded by segments of the angry right who embrace conspiracy theories and anti-progressive values, this crusade against gender equality represents a significant threat to social progress and individual rights. Under the guise of defending tradition and morality, they peddle dangerous ideologies that seek to roll back decades of hard-won advancements in gender equality. It is imperative to confront and expose the fallacies perpetuated by this movement, lest we risk eroding the foundations of a fair and just society.

At the heart of the populist war on gender lies a deep-seated fear of change. Fear has people propagate the notion that the recognition of diverse gender identities undermines public safety and society as a whole. They cling to outdated gender norms and rigid definitions, refusing to acknowledge the complexity and fluidity of human identity.

One of the primary targets of this populist crusade is the transgender community. Transgender individuals face disproportionate levels of discrimination, violence, and marginalization, yet instead of championing their rights and dignity, the angry right seeks to strip them of their humanity.

Now, the target is the children. By spreading falsehoods about gender identity and portraying transgender individuals as threats to public safety, they foster a culture of fear and intolerance. Children are now at serious risk.

The populist war on gender extends beyond mere rhetoric, manifesting in policy decisions that actively harm marginalized communities. From discriminatory bathroom bills to efforts to ban transgender youth from accessing healthcare, these initiatives represent a direct assault on the rights and freedoms of transgender individuals. Such regressive policies not only perpetuate harm but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes and stigmatization.

The erosion of gender equality also extends to women’s rights, as populists seek to roll back reproductive rights and undermine efforts to achieve gender parity in various spheres of society. By perpetuating myths about women’s roles and capabilities, they seek to limit women’s autonomy and keep them relegated to traditional gender roles.

At the heart of the populist war on gender lies a fundamental misunderstanding of the concept of equality. By rejecting established scientific consensus on issues such as gender identity and sexuality, populists undermine the integrity of research and sow seeds of doubt and confusion. It is crucial to confront the populist war on gender head-on and expose the fallacies and dangers inherent in its ideology. This requires fostering dialogue, promoting education, and advocating for policies that uphold the principles of equality and justice for all. It also entails standing in solidarity with marginalized communities and amplifying their voices in the face of discrimination and oppression.

I wonder if it is already too late. Yet, I can’t remain quiet and concede defeat.
