Summary

The article humorously discusses the internal dialogue we have with ourselves, juxtaposing the cautious, self-conscious voice with the one that encourages us to relax and be ourselves.

Abstract

The piece, titled "The voice inside my head says…," delves into the common human experience of internal conversations. It presents a list of typical admonitions from a critical inner voice, such as reminders to be careful with words and actions, to maintain social propriety, and to follow personal hygiene routines. This is contrasted with a more liberated voice that challenges the first, advocating for authenticity and questioning the need for constant self-censorship. The author uses humor to illustrate the absurdity and familiarity of these internal debates, ultimately suggesting that we should embrace the challenge of being true to ourselves. The article concludes with a personal sign-off and an invitation for readers to participate in a writing challenge, reinforcing the theme of self-expression and connection.

The voice inside my head says…

The voice inside my head says to me:

  • Be careful what I say.
  • Be careful what I think.
  • Be careful what I do.
  • Don’t make a huge stink!
  • Eat those vegetables!
  • Try to please everyone that is on that “please everyone on this list” list!!
  • Stop staring at those strangers!
  • Pick those socks up off the floor!
  • Did I brush my teeth?
  • Smile!
  • I should act like I’m having fun!
  • I tried not to use that dirty word!!
  • The people over there look familiar … no, they don’t!
  • Why did I wave at them?
  • Did I floss today?
  • OH MY GOSH…I need to stop talking!
  • Those people look like my long-lost cousins twice removed roommate!
  • Just drive! No one wants that hand sign flashed at them!
  • Not everyone needs to hear what you’re thinking!
  • I KNEW I should have listened better in math class!
  • I knew I shouldn’t have laughed in church today!
  • Oh no! I laughed, and they were being serious!
  • Wonder what that man is thinking with a haircut like that!
  • Did I floss today!!!???

And then the OTHER VOICE CORRECTS THE FIRST VOICE AND TELLS IT TO SHUT UP ALREADY!!

And they both laugh and laugh!
