The Voice in Your Head Just Read This Title

What voice? The one asking right now

Have you ever noticed the voice in your head? The one constantly talking, narrating everything we see, making up conversations…

I am pretty sure you know what I am talking about, but just to make sure, try saying balloon in your head. Now said louder, balloon. Now scream it, BALLOON. It’s there, right?

Well in this article, I’ll walk you through some of the things I learned about this voice, mainly because when I read about it, it gave me peace of mind. I want to share it with you, in case it helps you as much as it helped me.

Things we will cover:

  • What is this voice?
  • Why is it always narrating what you see and having conversations?
  • What’s its purpose?
  • Does this voice belong to me?

What is this voice?

Michael Singer defines this voice as internal energy that needs to be released. I’ll explain this with an example so that you can understand it better.

Let’s say you have a very important presentation. Wouldn’t your inner voice constantly rehearse the dialogue in your head? Going over all the topics, over and over again. I am going to do great. But I won’t if I keep forgetting about this line. I have to do it perfectly, if I don’t I will get fired and end up living on the street.

Did you notice how the voice went from I am doing great to end up living on the street in just a couple of sentences?

You are nervous and need to exteriorize this energy because it is building up inside of you. But of course, that is not all. Even when you are fully relaxed, this voice still talks. Let’s find out why.

Why is it always narrating what you see and having conversations?

Let’s go over the most common scenarios we can find this voice talking.

Conversations

That was so embarrassing, why did I have to open my mouth? Well, I thought I had the right answer. Clearly, I didn’t, next time I should just shut up and listen. But what if I know the answer, I want to speak up. But I will feel embarrassed all over again…

As you can see and have experienced, this voice assumes both sides of the conversation. But, who is going to win if it’s the same voice talking for both sides? It’s pointless to have such an argument then, right?

Well, the main reason is that this voice is trying to get someplace safe. It is looking for reasons strong enough to give you an answer you feel comfortable with. Either, I will never speak up again or it was not so embarrassing.

Narrations

Imagine you are taking a walk. Oh look at that dog, he’s so cute. That is a big tree… Did you see that car? Oh, the traffic lights are still red.

Aren’t you already seeing that? Why does this voice feel the urge to narrate everything you see for you?

The main reason is, that it’s creating a relationship with everything you see. It is not just a dog anymore, it’s a cute dog you saw. It’s not a car, but a car you have seen. And this makes you feel comfortable, closer to things. But why would you want to feel close to external things?

What’s its purpose?

You cannot control the world, you have no power over it. Will it rain? I hope it doesn’t. Oh, I don’t want rain, I want to wear sandals.

Whether it rains or not, your thoughts won’t change that fact, it’s a waste of time to think about it. But the voice does.

I am tired. If only my house was not that far away… Don’t worry because we are almost there, when we get home you’ll take a shower and lie on the sofa watching a movie, order in

Why is it telling you how tired you are as if you weren’t the one feeling tired? Did you notice what it’s doing? It creates comfort for you, by recreating the world in your head.

As I said, this voiceover has no power over the external world, so it creates an internal world where it can control everything.

But if you take a closer look, all these thoughts won’t change anything in the world. The sun will rise and will set, and whatever you thought about that day won’t have an impact on anybody but yourself.

Does this voice belong to me?

Now that we are aware of this voice, we can start paying attention to all the topics it talks about. Take a closer look and realize how much nonsense it can say in just a couple of minutes. Overwhelming, right?

Well, sometimes we make the mistake of feeling overwhelmed by this voice because we think it’s us speaking. But it’s not. It’s just a voice we listen to. Are you the songs you listen to? The flowers you smell? The objects you see? No, you are the one experiencing them. The same happens with this voice.

The first step toward growth is coming to terms with the fact that you’re not the voice in your head but the one who hears it.

In the next article, I’ll be writing about the second step, learning to detach from this voice.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this article! I am grateful that I could share my knowledge with you and truly hope it somehow helped you. If you have something you would like to add or another insight on the matter, don’t hesitate to share it with me.

Have a lovely day!
