The Bizarre Disappearance of Tara Calico — Part 1

This is the story of how a young girl disappeared — and how the discovery of a baffling Polaroid photo some 9 states away, sent the nation into a frenzy

The image once suspected to be that of Tara Calico was obtained via FOIA request by Wild Orchid Media-a company wholly owned by author/owner Kurt Dillon and republished with permission of the FBI

In this 2-part episode, our panel of investigative reporters delves into the story of Tara Calico, the 19-year-old girl who was riding her bike along a highway just outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1988 when she vanished without a trace — along with the bike.

While disappearances such as this are all too frequent in today’s world, this one ended up with a few very unusual twists.

Fast forward to June 1989, and a convenience store customer in Port St. John’s Florida came across a disturbing Polaroid photograph, laying wantonly in the store parking lot. That Polaroid is the featured image of this story.

The photo depicts a young girl, about Tara’s age, lying beside a younger boy, also unidentified, on a bed of some kind, in the back of a white van. The youngsters have tape over their mouths and appear to be bound with some sort of restraints, however, the restraints themselves are not visible in the picture.

Numerous sources, including Tara’s mother, claimed to verify that the girl in the photo was in fact, Tara. This was also evidenced by the book depicted and staged in the photo to face the camera — one of Tara’s favorites.

Over the years, this case would take many unforeseen turns and ultimately would lead nowhere except for more twists — until recently.
