The Value of Saying Thank You
It can change someone’s life
I was with a friend last Friday.
He said that he found it rare for people to be polite these days. He said that people don’t say thank you enough anymore.
I thought about it for a moment. He was right. We don’t. I don’t.
It seems like such a difficult thing to say thank you sometimes, but what a difference it can make.
At the beginning of the pandemic, I went to a supermarket. I noticed an employee who just looked really stressed. I said to her, “Thank you for being here at work. I know this must be a difficult and scary time to be here right now. Thank you for what you are doing. I appreciate it.”
I have no idea how the rest of the day was for that person, but I can only imagine that if the tables were turned I would have felt that I was appreciated and valued. It would have made a huge difference to me.
Thank you conveys so many things. It says that you value the person, the act, the intention, and the heart of the person you are thanking. No other statement can reach a person’s soul faster than the beautiful words thank you.
So, in the spirit of this essay, I want to say thank you to you. Thank you for being on the planet. Thank you for the beautiful light you bring. Thank you for loving yourself and those around you the way you do. Thank you for having the courage to get up another day and try to make the world a better place.
I just can’t think of a better way to convey appreciation.
Try saying thank you to someone today. I bet it will change their world.
