The Unsolved Mystery of a Sunset Over Lake Superior

October Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Site or Sight”

Fireball’s rays shimmer on rippling water.

This photo was taken in Ontario, Canada from the shore of Lake Superior. I traveled there with my spouse last month for the first time and was astonished by the incredible presence of the lake. Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world! Standing before it is like gazing at the sea. It’s like the wild, undulating Pacific Ocean I loved, and began to take for granted, before I left the California coast in my 20s.

Our vacation was loosely planned and peaceful, energized by the delight of unfettered exploration. Each day we roved along the shore in our van until — with the help of an app called iOverlander — we found an appealing spot for overnight camping, one with nearby hiking trails and a view of the lake. At each place we camped, we were almost always rewarded with privacy, relaxing scenery, and a photo-worthy beautiful sunset.

This seemed like splendid luck at the time, but it had one dastardly drawback. After the trip, I was miffed to discover the exact whereabouts in my photos was a mystery! My camera recorded Ontario as the location of all the images, with no labeling of the landmarks or nearby towns. I jotted in a journal during our trip, but it offered few clues for solving the mystery.

There is something I can confirm about the sunset photo in this post:

It’s a glistening sight from a peaceful site I cannot cite with certainty.

Thank you to Sandi Parsons for creating this October prompt for the Six Word Photo Story Challenge publication. I enjoyed the homophone-word-play featured in this challenge. And thanks to Mary Chang Story Writer for bringing this publication to life and to Vidya Sury, Collecting Smiles for all she gives to the editorial team — a terrific and talented trio.
