The Unsolved Murders: Interesting Facts About Baron Inn Murders
From the killing of two teenagers to the sighting of spirits at the Inn. Here are some facts about these horrific murders.
The Lumber Baron Inn’s History
John Mouat constructed the 9,000-square-foot mansion in 1890. Mouat built the estate for his spouse, Amelia, and their five kids. Mouat was a Scottish immigrant who held the title of Lumber Baron. According to reports, the Mouat Lumber firm constructed more than 200 houses and buildings in Denver.
Known for its extravagant parties for Denver’s most affluent, the house’s third story had a glamorous 20-foot pyramid ceiling and maple flooring. Every bedroom featured a separate bathroom and several artistically designed fireplaces. The house was converted into an apartment complex sometime in the middle to late 1900s, with 23 individual flats available for rent.
The Cara Knoche and Marianne Weaver Murders
Cara Lee Knoche, a 16-year-old runaway, quit her studies and rented a room in the Lumber Baron Inn in 1970. But on October 11, she seemed to have changed her mind at her parents’ house. She celebrated her 17th birthday and enthusiastically announced that she would move out of her flat and start high school in four days.
After two days, she ended up dead inside her flat, which is now known as the Valentine’s Suite. Knoche’s murderer sexually assaulted her before strangling her to death.
The 18-year-old Marianne Weaver visited Knoche at the apartment that day and happened to stroll in at the worst possible time. Inside the flat was an unknown assailant. According to multiple reports, Weaver arrived just in time to see him kill her as well. The man shot and murdered Weaver either during or shortly after killing Knoche.
Bodies Discovered
John Le-chuga discovered the two women dead in the flat. He was astonished to find the door wide open of the flat while visiting her friend Knoche. This discovery caught his attention because it was unusual.
He entered the room and turned on the lights. He found Marianne’s body lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to her head. The naked body of Cara Lee Knoche was discovered beneath her bed. She had been strangled to death.
Investigation Started
As soon as the bodies of the two teenage females were found in the flat, investigations got underway. Nevertheless, there was little chance of resolving this homicide case as the investigation continued. The perpetrator who killed the two girls was never apprehended, and the murder weapon was never found.
The building was Turned Into an Inn.
The structure was in such bad condition by the 1990s that the authorities had condemned it. But in 1991, Walter and Julie Keller saved the formerly magnificent building. Today, the structure is fully restored after the Kellers undertook the difficult task of eliminating years of disrepair and regaining the property’s former splendor.
One of Denver’s most exquisite objects of Queen Anne architecture, the Lumber Baron Inn & Gardens now hosts weddings, murder mystery weekends, and overnight visitors.
Is Lumber Baron Inn Haunted?
The Inn has had several ghostly experiences since reopening, including reports of seeing a young woman. Phantom footsteps are also frequently reported.
HauntedHouses.com claims that the Lumber Baron Inn offers more than just that. It is considered the most haunted location in Denver. It’s speculated that Cara and Marianne’s ghosts have been sighted in the corridor outside their flat where they were killed.
Conclusion:
Many people were startled, and their families were grieving over the unsolved murders of Cara Lee Knoche and Marianne Weaver. There have been several theories put up regarding these killings, and the families are still seeking justice.
