Summary

The poem "The universe lied to me" reflects on the narrator's experience of misinterpreting the universe's signs as a promise of romantic love, only to be met with the reality of unrequited feelings.

Abstract

The poem begins with the narrator's hopeful interpretation of a past lover's return, perceiving it as a gesture of love from the universe. This hope is met with a crushing revelation when the lover expresses a desire to remain friends, not partners. The universe, which the narrator believed was offering love on a silver platter, seems to have deceived them with the message that they had waited long enough for love. The poem captures the emotional journey from anticipation to disappointment, encapsulating the pain of unfulfilled romantic expectations.

Opinions

  • The narrator initially believes the universe is presenting them with the love they have longed for.
  • There is a sense of betrayal and disillusionment when the expected romantic relationship does not materialize.
  • The poem suggests that the universe can be misleading or at least that human interpretation of its signs can be flawed.
  • The author conveys a deep emotional response to the situation, highlighting the intensity of the narrator's feelings.
  • The poem implies that the narrator's expectations and the reality of the situation are starkly different, leading to a feeling of having been lied to by the universe.

A poem

I want to believe him coming back

was the universe giving me

love on a silver plate

telling me

here it is

you have been waiting long enough

for love

when he drops the bomb

I can feel my heart sink

‘I want us to be friends’
