Summary

The author reflects on the concept of the universe providing guidance through life's challenges, using personal experiences to illustrate how ignoring signs can lead to more severe consequences.

Abstract

The article discusses the idea that the universe sends us signals, akin to a car's warning lights, to guide us towards what we need to address in our lives. The author shares a personal anecdote about neglecting their health, which resulted in a serious health crisis. This experience led them to understand the importance of heeding the universe's indicators, such as feelings of guilt, anxiety, or physical symptoms. The author emphasizes that while the lesson may come in a harsh form, it is ultimately a gift that promotes personal growth, healthier habits, and a more attuned lifestyle.

Opinions

  • The universe communicates with us through synchronicities and signs, urging us to pay attention to what needs change or improvement in our lives.
  • Ignoring the universe's signs can lead to negative outcomes, which the author likens to a car's warning lights that signal low tire pressure or engine trouble.
  • Personal experiences, such as the author's health scare with acute pancreatitis, are presented as dramatic lessons from the universe that force individuals to listen to their bodies and make necessary lifestyle adjustments.
  • The author believes that even severe consequences, like their diagnosis of diabetes, can be viewed positively as they lead to healthier choices and a deeper understanding of personal needs.
  • The article suggests that by interpreting life's challenges as lessons for growth, individuals can avoid larger problems and evolve more consciously.

The Universe Has My Back

I believe we have touched on this topic many times in the past. We called it different things like synchronicity, fate, destiny, going with the flow, and many other things. The key to all of this is that if something is meant to happen, then it will happen. A corollary to this is, if you ignore something long enough, it is going to bite you in the ass.

I will get the synchronicity out of the way early this post. The weather has turned cooler as autumn has fully taken control of things. I had not driven my car for quite a while, having taken a sort of forced break from my exercise routine. On Thursday I needed to go out and drive somewhere. I got to where I needed to be and left after. Soon after I left, a warning light came on in my car showing that one or more of my tires was low on air. This can happen if you have a flat tire or a weather change. I pulled into a service station, checked my air pressure and filled up each tire to its proper pressure.

This morning when I read Diana’s prompt I thought back on that and realized that he Universe also uses warning lights to let us know and then remind us that our “tires” are low or our “engine” needs service. How often have we neglected something we knew that we had to do or work on, only to be reminded by the Universe? First subtly, then if we ignore it, it eventually hits us with a brick. These can be feelings of guilt, anxiety, emptiness, sadness, or unexplained anger.

We have all had things in our life that we wished to change. Often it was easier to ignore it. Self-medicating by drinking. Self-medicating by behaviors. Living in denial. The Universe has indicator lights. It might in this case be a hangover. One hangover in many months was a great party. Hangovers every weekend or every morning are a warning light. Do it often enough and the “check engine” light comes on.

For me, the biggest way the Universe has shown me that it has my back many of you will think that it was not a good lesson. I will reveal it and then explain the Universe’s gift:

Late in my teaching career I was not listening well to my body. In hindsight, I know my body had sent me many signals that I needed to have my gall bladder checked. I ignored them and ignored them. Finally one day the pain was so intense that I could not. A gall stone had made its way into my pancreatic duct and caused an acute pancreatitis attack. I was hospitalized for about six weeks and almost died. The result was permanent damage to my pancreas and becoming an insulin dependent diabetic.

How is this a gift people ask me? I now have learned to listen to my body. I do because I have to in order to survive. The result is that I eat healthier, I get exercise, I am conscious of my blood sugar levels. I need to exercise to keep my A1C low. I need to choose foods that do not let my blood sugar spike. I need to listen to my body. I choose to look at the positives. I am structured that way.

I think if we start looking at situations in our lives as what is the lesson we are to learn from this. What is the way that the situation can help us grow? What is the indicator light telling us? The choice is ours. Will you wait for an enormous lesson like I had, or will you see the early warning light and make needed adjustments on your path of growth and evolving?
