The Unexpected Gratitude of Missed Buses and Detours
Unexpected Path

It was the usual Tuesday morning, and I was running the average kind of late. Dodging puddles and sidestepping the morning people, I tried not to walk the time to catch the 8:15 bus.
But even when I tried my best and gave an anguished stare at it, it just left me behind — the bus, that is. Little would I have known that this missed bus was going to teach me a very important lesson in gratitude.
Left at the bus stop, where the next bus wasn’t due for another half an hour, those were the frustrations that brewed within me. Really not the morning that I had in mind. Then, as I stood there trying to catch my breath, something really unexpected happened. I began to notice my surroundings.
The charming corner coffee shop, the flower seller unloading a bright display, the happy babble of school children — facets of my morning journey that were never given time to be noticed. Deciding to fit something positive from this unplanned break into my daily regimen, I walked into the coffee shop.
The brewed coffee aroma embraced me, something that I always experienced in quick drags. I found a cozy corner, sat with my cup, and allowed myself just to be. At that moment, the world didn’t feel fast — like I always thought it was.
As I sipped my coffee, I watched people coming in and out. Each had their story — his now; that’s even funny. Each one had his own story, his own purpose. Really put into perspective for me how enveloped I was in my little world most of the time. I wasn’t aware of the lives going on. This unexpected detour had offered me a chance to connect with the world in a way I hadn’t in a long time.
The rest of the day felt different. I found myself more patient, and more present. Small things that are never noticed, like a smile from an affable stranger, the warm rays of the sun that bring comfort, the melodious song of a street performer, all seemed to jump out. I was appreciative, and conscious. The missed bus hadn’t just delayed my morning; it had given me a fresh perspective.
From that day on, I began to embrace life’s detours.
A missed bus, long lines in supermarkets, and sudden downpours are ways to slow down and smell the roses. I learned to find gratitude not just in life’s grand gestures, but also in its minor inconveniences.
In life’s rush, we often miss its charm. Amidst reaching the finish line, we forget to enjoy the journey. Sometimes we have to miss the bus to know that there’s a world beyond our schedules and daily routines. To be Sometimes, just two minutes late…
So the next time you find yourself cursing some little mishap, well… take a look around… There might be something to be grateful about…
