The Unexpected Business Lessons I Learned From 20 Years On The Baseball Field

How to leverage unrelated past experiences for your success today

Photo by Palm Beach Atlantic University from Final Announcement

For 20 years of my life, I’ve been an athlete.

When you immerse yourself in one role for that many years, it’s daunting to imagine doing anything else successfully.

I felt it, and so did my peers as we graduated from college.

What the hell do we do now?

Many, I’m sure, resonate with this sentiment.

But after struggle and introspection I’ve forged a new identity.

Deeply influenced by 20 years on the baseball field.

If you’ve ever doubted how skills from one chapter of your life can benefit the next, this is for you.

Today, I’ll share:

  • How I transformed 20 years of baseball experience into invaluable business lessons.
  • Why your seemingly “unrelated” past is crucial for your present and future.
  • How to harness your history to tackle today’s challenges.
  • The power of your unique journey and how it can be your greatest asset.

Let’s dive in.

We all started as a rookie

Stepping onto the field as a freshman at the University of Maine, I felt every bit the newcomer.

The warm February breeze in Tallahassee, Florida seemed to amplify the difference between my past experiences and this new, overwhelming stage as we prepared to face Florida State University.

As expected, the first games were brutal.

Not only was I not on par with them, but I couldn’t even make contact with the ball.

It felt as if I was in a league I didn’t belong in — too young, too inexperienced.

Yet, in a turn of events, during our third game, I connected.

Not just any connection — it was a grand slam, my first college hit.

Of course I still have the ball!

But here’s the thing: it took nine strikeouts to get there.

Nine failures before I could taste that sweet success.

This is eerily similar to the world of business.

When you hit a wall of enduring repeated failures, there’s always a chance a major success is waiting on the other end of it.

But you have to stay in the game for it to happen.

Not so fast

Following that grand slam in Tallahassee, I realized the essence of persistence.

However, baseball had more in store for me.

Lessons that would serve as the foundation when I transitioned to the world of business.

Injuries, particularly the dreaded ACL tear in high school, forced me to confront adversity head-on.

Sitting on the sidelines.

Watching my dreams hang by a thread.

I had two options:

  • Wallow in despair
  • Adapt and grow

Just as businesses pivot during crises, I chose the latter.

That choice brought me another five rewarding years.

My experiences on the field weren’t just about personal challenges; they were about team dynamics and understanding people.

The teams that lacked chemistry often faltered.

Despite having skilled players.

This mirrors businesses perfectly.

A team with great individuals but poor synergy will always underperform.

I recall a home game at Palm Beach Atlantic in beautiful West Palm Beach Florida.

Against the odds, my teammate Blake Ebo and I transformed a near-certain defeat into a victory.

I tied it with a two-out base hit.

And he ended it in extras.

What a thrill.

This taught me that outcomes can be changed.

When a project seems to be failing in business, a turnaround is always possible with a bit of hope, determination and a hint of luck.

All those years on the baseball field gave me not just technical skills but invaluable life lessons.

When I stepped into the business arena, it wasn’t my knowledge of baseball that I carried.

But the spirit of resilience, teamwork, humility, and the tenacity to change outcomes.

Universal lessons from the diamond

While my experiences stem from baseball, the essence of my journey is universally relatable.

Who among us hasn’t faced setbacks, doubted their worth, or grappled with finding their footing in new territory?

Each strikeout, whether on the baseball field or in our personal and professional lives, is an opportunity.

An opportunity to learn, adapt, and come back stronger.

Injuries and setbacks?

They’re life’s way of testing our resolve.

For every torn ACL, there’s a dream job we missed, a venture that failed, or a relationship that broke.

Similarly, team dynamics in baseball remind us of our families, workplaces, and friendships.

A group of talented individuals doesn’t guarantee a successful team.

It’s the chemistry, understanding, and mutual respect that defines success.

Think about your life journey for a moment, the challenges, the victories, and the setbacks.

If you’ve ever felt out of depth or overwhelmed by a new challenge, remember my struggle against Florida State University.

Replace it with your own moments of doubt and see the parallels.

For those times you’ve encountered personal or professional setbacks, consider my torn ACL.

Think about the obstacles that threatened to derail your dreams.

And for those instances where you rallied against the odds, were part of an incredible team moment, or felt the thrill of unexpected success, remember that game in West Palm Beach.

Now, superimpose your own triumphant experiences on it.

In each chapter of our lives, our stories might be different, but the essence remains the same.

Your life stories are the most powerful weapons to fight your future obstacles.

Use them.

Have a wonderful week. Thanks for reading.
