The Unexpected Autistic Life Updated Guidelines
And now we have the power to boost!

Welcome to The Unexpected Autistic Life!
We publish personal essays and expert pieces on autism and everything it entails.
We want to provide a safe space for stories that destigmatize autistic people while, at the same time, providing useful information that will help others better understand what autism is really about.
Submission Guidelines
Please read carefully the following guidelines to ensure your story will be accepted.
Topics
We are, of course, a publication focused on the lives of autistic people: the fight for equality, the problem with getting an education without being ostracized from the classroom, their experiences in the workplace, and much more.
If you have a story that will allow readers to deepen their understanding of the lives of autistic people, we want it.
To help Medium readers find your story, we ask that you use the following tags:
- Autism (this one is mandatory in every piece you send to us; the others depend on the topic of your story).
- Mental Health
- Relationships
- Disability
- Equality
If the subject matter of your story is not included here, use a tag from the Medium's topic page to help increase the visibility of your post.
Quality Guidelines
Please read and follow Medium's Quality Guidelines. We are part of the Boost Nomination pilot program and, therefore, could help your story get the reads it deserves.
However, in order to do that, it is essential your piece adheres to Medium's guidelines.
In short:
- No stories that are a regurgitation of some Wikipedia article. Instead, speak from your personal experience or your expertise.
- No AI writing.
- Double-check for typos and verify your sources (if your story requires them).
- Add image attribution.
- Limit self-promotion, meaning don't add too many CTAs (Calls to action). We suggest you limit to adding a short line about where people can find out more about you and maybe a couple of box links for those who might want to read more of your work.
Important Considerations
- Keep in mind that we are a publication that uses identity-first language (if you wish to learn more about it, you can click here).
- We ask for your stories to be at least 3-minute long.
- Use the Sharethrough Headline Analyzer to improve your titles.
- Use the Capitalize My Title tool to format your titles (choose the AP tab).
- We suggest you follow the publication and engage with your fellow writers. This is an excellent way to get inspiration for your writing!
- Keep the private notes function activated so we can communicate with you. If you have turned it off, it will be impossible for us to provide feedback on your story.
- Make sure to visit this Submission Guidelines from time to time in case we have any updates.
