I took Medium for granted when I started, so it took me more time to reach these numbers. I know if you are writing on Medium, you would have encountered so many random followers who just came to your profile and started following you without even reading any of your work.

I don’t have any problem with it. However, if you are following someone, you must read their work before following. I know some new writers follow others to get some attention and hope that they might follow them back. I don’t recommend the following someone randomly, but I surely will follow if I am interested in reading your work.

Getting genuine followers is somehow a slow process on Medium. It takes some time to build a genuine audience who will read your work regularly.

In the last couple of months, I increased my followers by 300 in a month. The thing that helped me a lot is I started connecting with people. I started reading and responding to my fellow writers’ work. This actually helped me to build a genuine audience.
