The U.S. Capitol has been a sacred place

During my thirteen years of living in Virginia and working in Washington, D.C., I made many trips to the Capitol to visit members of Congress and to participate in the actions of government. Many people who work in the nation’s capital often have reasons to go to the Capitol for meetings or events. It was always a pleasure to go there, and it always seemed entirely safe.

Unfortunately, that is no longer the case.

The Capitol police were ever present, and there were safeguards in place. You were able to walk freely after you were cleared for admittance.

World leaders and government officials from all the states attended meetings at the Capitol. Tourists regularly visited the Capitol, and school children found it exciting to be there.

Of course, there have been many arguments occur at the Capitol as Democrats and Republicans have debated on issues which they felt were important. There have been heated discussions and outright hostility expressed by the lawmakers. It has not always been a place of peace and quiet.

Since the insurrection which took place at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, by supporters of Donald Trump who tried to protest the election results, the Capitol has changed. Visitors are so free to visit and to walk around securely as had been the case.

The Capitol was a place where visitors from all over the world regularly entered to partake of the beauty and grandeur of a beautiful building. Much of history is displayed and explained in the Capitol Visitors’ Center and throughout the magnificent edifice.

Parts of the Capitol were damaged and destroyed as rioters stormed into the building illegally. They broke windows and doors. They put members of Congress and the police at risk. They were out of control. They took video of themselves and each other as they did what they thought was the bidding of Trump. The world was able to see what they did.

Then the Capitol had become a fortress guarded by fencing and armed police along with military personnel. It has not ceased to be a place where danger lurks and can erupt at any moment.

It is not known if and when the Capitol can get back to normal and visits will be allowed as they had been previously. Travel is a big part of life for many people. The Capitol and Washington, D.C. were a major tourist destination.

The past year has been especially difficult for the United States with the pandemic, a contentious election, an insurrection at the Capitol, and racism running rampant.

The future is uncertain. Hopefully, the COVID pandemic can get over, racism can be curtailed, and the Capitol can get back to normal before too long.
