The U.S. Becomes The 1st Country With The Most Data Breaches
The year before, Russia was the country with the most accounts breached. Security and data privacy is becoming a difficult task safeguard. According to a detailed study by Surfshark, the United States (U.S.) had 49.8 million leaked accounts. That is 9 times more compared to the previous quarters.

As you can see in the graphic above the U.S. was followed by Russia, Spain and France. The total number of accounts breached globally was 110.8 million accounts in the second quarter. In other words, as we speak there are 14 accounts being breached every second.
Here are the ranks by country of accounts breached:
- United States ranks 1st, with 49.8M leaked accounts
- Russia (15.3M)
- Spain (3.7M)
- France (3.4M)
- Turkey (2.8M)
Overall, the frequency of accounts getting their data stolen or take in the U.S. represented a 156% increase in breached users worldwide.

“According to the most recent Surfshark’s global data breach statistics, leaked accounts surged almost threefold in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the previous quarter,” says Agneska Sablovskaja, Lead Researcher at Surfshark. “Such alarming increase in data breaches highlights that the current data protection measures are not sufficient, and sensitive information remains at risk as cybercriminals continue to access it in ever higher numbers.”
