The Truth of Dieting Plans: Fasting

An experience in my travels on how intermittent fasting put me on the right path to weight loss.

Before landing a job in the tech world I worked as an order selector in warehouse picking cases. The section that I worked in, the freezer, ran at about negative ten and often times it would snow. Ice covered the lanes that I picked by boxes in and I found my butt smacking the floor more times than I would care to remember. In order to keep myself warm I had to stay moving and with that I burned up a lot of energy. I started that job presumably overweight for my size and within a few months of picking cases I had reached a weight that I hadn’t seen in years.

The best part was that I could eat what I wanted and not tip the scale in the opposite direction. You know the way going up.

I was able to keep my weight off and continue to eat large portions of food and gorge until my heart was content. I knew that as soon as I stepped in that freezer I could just move as fast as I could and let all of that stored bad energy just melt right out of my system. Oh and I bought some better shoes so I wasn’t slipping and sliding anymore.

Don’t let me fool you, this job in no means was anything that I enjoyed doing. It paid pretty well and it came with a price, one being my time and the other being my well being.

This all started to change as soon as I got the nerve to pursue my dreams.

Everything comes with a price.

After hundreds of applications and about three botched interviews I landed a fourth and got my new job in the next few weeks. My days of picking in the cold were over and so was my terrible eating habits, little did I know.

I started working in tech support with my eyes on web development. This new job was pretty nice. They spoiled me by taking me out to eat, bringing food in and even had a refrigerator filled with beer. I mean who could go wrong there?

I indulged and indulged, and well you guessed it… indulged.

And eventually, the scale went in that opposite direction. Before I knew it my pants were tighter than I could have ever remembered them being and then I looked in that dreadful mirror.

I saw the change.

I jumped on the scale and found that I was fifteen pounds heavier in little to no time. I wasn’t moving like a used to and my eating habit remained the same.

I was in panic mode.

I had to do something quick. I mean I had to get back to the person that I was. The size that I was. I felt so great but it came at a price.

I had to move. So I researched fitness centers around my area and gave one a try that I ended up joining. Then the reality set it. I hadn’t worked out in a gym in years and I didn’t have to because I was picking thirty to fifty pound boxes everyday. I was in picking shape. I burned off everything that I ate. So you mean to tell me that I have to pick up some weights?

The difference was real. The struggle was even more real.

I went maybe once a week, here and there. No real plan. The agony of going in and getting my workout started. So I looked into alternatives. I had conversations with people who I knew that were in shape and ate well.

I took everything that they told me and continued to do my research on it.

I learned about managing my macronutrients which are my fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. None of this stuff mattered to me before but it was so important. Sure I was familiar with the terminology but once I began to log everything that I was eating and counting my calories my world came tumbling down. I mean fast.

I was in shock. You mean I ate that much? Today? Yesterday even?

I had to cut my portions down, but even that wasn’t enough because I was eating unhealthy foods. So I began meal planning and prepping the night before. I was never big on fast food so that wasn’t an issue. I found the culprit which was my high carbohydrate intake. By cutting that down to a minimum I could shed some pounds over time.

The problem with that is all the best foods in my mind contained a ton of carbohydrates. Why is this happening?

I didn’t want to eat like a rabbit and the reality that I soon found out was that I didn’t have to. I could make healthy versions of my favorite foods, cut down my portions and use a system of eating that controlled how and when I ate my meals each day.

One of the guys I spoke to mentioned it before and I pretty much blew it over until I did the research and it all made sense.

Intermittent Fasting.

Something that I had never done in my life before. I ate when I wanted to even when I didn’t need to. Now I would have to eat only a certain time through the day?
