The Truth Hurts: You’re Lazier Than You Think

How we rationalize our mediocrity

Often, doing the right thing means doing the hard thing. The average person doesn’t choose the difficult route when there’s an alternative. People tend to drift towards the path of least resistance. Example: Instead of rationalizing skipping a run because “it’s too hot outside” or “it’s too late,” instead, tell yourself, “I’m not going to run today because I’m too lazy to maintain discipline” (Peter Hollins).

We’re often lazier than we think, a truth we don’t want to face.

Other excuses we tell ourselves are: I’ll do it tomorrow, or I deserve a break since I’ve been doing well. Keep making these excuses and watch yourself progress backward.

What’s your excuse for not maintaining discipline today?
