Summary

The article discusses the risks and political pressures associated with reopening schools during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the lack of transparency and the prioritization of economic interests over public health.

Abstract

The author expresses deep concern for the safety of students and educators returning to in-person schooling amidst the ongoing global health crisis. Despite the widespread knowledge of safety protocols to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, such as mask-wearing and social distancing, the article highlights how political figures, particularly the former President of the United States, have undermined scientific guidance and promoted misinformation. This has led to a politicization of the pandemic response, compromising the well-being of children, young people, and school staff. The piece underscores the manipulation of data and the economic motivations behind the push to reopen schools, despite the known risks to those involved. The author, Dr. Deborah M. Vereen, a retired educator, calls for recognition of the serious threat the virus poses to all, including students, and criticizes the dishonesty and lack of transparency that have exacerbated the situation.

Opinions

  • The author believes that the reopening of schools has been influenced by economic agendas rather than health and safety considerations.
  • There is a strong criticism of political leaders, especially the former U.S. President, for spreading false information and downplaying the severity of the pandemic.
  • The article suggests that the politicization of the pandemic has led to non-adherence to safety guidelines, contributing to the spread of COVID-19.
  • The author is of the opinion that school leaders have been pressured and bullied into resuming in-person instruction, against scientific and medical advice.
  • Dr. Vereen emphasizes that students are not immune to the virus and that the rise in cases will inevitably affect the school community, including students, staff, and their families.
  • The author views the lack of transparency and dishonesty in handling the pandemic as a contributing factor to the loss of life, including among students.

The Truth About Schools Can’t Be Seen

It’s because the lack of transparency about reopening them safely has been too blinding

Have you been carrying the burden of concern for all of the students who have returned to their in-person school? Have you been filled with compassion for all of the educators who have been required to return to these jobs even though they have not been convinced that it is safe to do so?

So Have I

Many of the articles that I have written over the past several months express a lot of the concerns that many people everywhere share about schools reopening. Here are some of them.

All of our uneasiness has been held hostage by our fears month after month, week after week, and day after day. These anxieties have been translated into the very harsh reality of the absolute global dominance of the corona virus.

It does not discriminate against the powerful in contrast to the powerless. It does not choose the poor versus the wealthy nor the young versus the old. Covid-19 is a predator. It seeks humans to destroy.

Evidence Speaks

Professionals have shared robust scientific and medical truths about the impact of the virus. Significant safety guidelines have been developed by these individuals and widely communicated in a seamless manner. Billboards have displayed them. Public service announcements have reinforced them. Business establishments have posted them.

People everywhere know that they must:

  • wear facial masks;
  • social distance at least six feet;
  • use good hand hygiene by washing them frequently; and
  • maintain good ventilation.

Most importantly, people everywhere know that if this medical and scientific advice is adhered to, the spread of Covid-19 will be slowed.

Sadly, many people within our society have ignored these recommendations because they have chosen to politicize the pandemic. The most powerful political leader in the United Stated incited this disgraceful viewpoint by continuously promoting false information by:

  • referring to the Corona-19 as a hoax;
  • misleading the public by making them believe the health crisis is rapidly disappearing;
  • building the spirit of optimism of unsuspecting people by causing them to believe that a vaccine would be available very soon;
  • sharing inconsistent and false information;
  • minimizing the number of Americans who have died from the pandemic;
  • forcing citizens to believe that mask wearing is a sign of weakness; and
  • suggesting that ingesting household disinfectants had the capacity to quickly clean the virus out of the human body.

The President of the United States has used deceptive and cunning rhetoric to undermine medical science at the expense of the health and safety of human beings again and again.

In doing so, the well-being of children and young people as well as the adults who support them at school has also been compromised.

Schools Pose the Greatest Risk

Many school leaders were intimidated to open the doors of their schools for in-person learning and instruction. They were bullied into believing that they would lose funding if they failed to return to their regular mode of instruction.

Scientific and medical data were also manipulated by political powerhouses to make people believe that children and young people were not really impacted by the pandemic compared to adults. These ruthless, uncaring, and deceitful people made these claims because they only had their sights on rebuilding a strong economy. For them, reopening schools contributed to their economic bottom line. It was all about money.

Conclusion

The terrible reality is that students are not immune from the corona virus. Now that the number of cases people being infected with the virus is rising in many regions of the United States, students as well as school personnel and their families will become victims, too.

This is what deception has done. Dishonesty and the lack of transparency are continuing to kills people. Among these are students.
