Why Is This $25 CPM Marketing A Volatile Game!
The Truth About The Difference Between YouTube And Medium
How and Why You Should Be Writing Your Content on Medium — J.D Rehbein-Wrightstein Shares His Personal Experience With The Two Sites.

When You Work for YouTube, It Doesn’t Matter How Many People Read Your Work.
I Recently Read An Article With The Following Headline…
“3.5 Million Views on YouTube Earned Me the Same Amount of Money as 90K Views on Medium.” As a content creator, this piqued my interest and I wanted to know more so I clicked the link and read the whole article. The story is about how it takes 45x more views per day on Medium than YouTube to generate an equivalent amount of money.
After thinking about it more, this got me thinking if that is really true, then why bother posting my content on Medium? I understand the exposure you get from Medium is something special, but honestly, if I have to post my content 45x more on Medium to get the exposure I want, then isn’t it better to just stick with YouTube?
I thought so, so I decided to put it out there for discussion. Let’s open this one up for conversation folks. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but if you are a content creator making a living off your work, then think about this. Is it better to have 10 posts on Medium that each has 90K views, but 100x fewer views per day on YouTube? Or is it better to have 10 posts on YouTube that have 900K views with 45x more daily views on YouTube?
Personally, I think the latter makes sense. I don’t care how good Medium is, they can’t compete with YouTube’s massive audience. Let’s get real here, reach on YouTube is of enormous importance if you are a content creator. And even with Medium’s more selective approach to publishing, there are more blogs than you can shake a stick at.

So Again, Let Me State This Clearly
If you are a content creator, reach on YouTube is of enormous importance if you are a content creator. Heck, if your reach, engagement, and very presence on YouTube aren’t enough to make money off your content, then how much does it really matter?
Answer: It doesn’t.
And That’s the Problem with Medium’s $25 CPM Experiment for Content Creators
So back to our original question. Is having 10 posts with 90K views at 100x fewer views per day more valuable than 10 posts with 900K views and 45x more daily views on the platform?
I think that’s a no-brainer. Don’t get me wrong, I like Medium and I am glad it exists. Heck, we publish content on the platform too, but there is a problem here folks, and we need to discuss it openly.
Medium doesn’t try to be YouTube, they don’t even pretend to be YouTube. They are a platform for writers. Sure, it’s a nice one but they are simply not trying to compete with the likes of YouTube so how can they expect content creators to optimize their posts for their platform?
Here Is What I Think Is Wrong With The $25 CPM Experiment
The assumption is that people want to read more because it costs them 25 cents per thousand views. This clearly incentivizes quantity over quality. Think about it. Do we really need more content on the internet? If so, why?
Trying To Be YouTube On Medium
I think this is one of the major problems with Medium’s $25 CPM experiment. Yes, Medium is different than YouTube but that doesn’t mean they should try to be something they’re not. We don’t need another YouTube. The internet does not need another YouTube. At least, I don’t think we do.
Medium is absolutely better because it puts the focus on the work. YouTube, in comparison, is more of a social site with videos thrown in. The video is not the focal point, it is just one of many distractions. On Medium your article or post can be much more engaging, with a chance to build a community, increase traffic and maybe even make money.
Consider These Two Comparisons About Youtube And Medium
A personal experience looking at how clicking through to an article from another site leads to more views on Youtube than the original website (medium).

Being A Writer, This Brings Me To My Main Point
It’s all about content. And we become writers because we like to write (duh). The best writers may be the ones who put the effort into creating great content that people like reading.
But we also have to think about where we put our content. I’m sure you’ve heard all the arguments about how much time and effort it takes to create a video and to edit and upload it in the correct settings. It’s also not easy to make great content for YouTube. Not everyone is going to like what you’re doing, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t ways around that (ironically).
With Medium, you can create a profile, either with your personal or business information. For instance, I have created an account using my registered business information. Getting back to the point, this means that if people like what you’ve got to say, they’ll follow you and in the future, will see more content in their feed (if you post).
That’s an advantage in and of itself. But we also have the bonus of having a built-in community we can reach through our posts. If we want to get even more specific, we can share our work with other writers, get feedback from people who talk about our content, or just comment on it. We can also share our link through social media, or simply press “post” on our article.
I’m not saying that it’s better to only write on Medium. If you’re into writing, then it might be great to try out both sites and see what works for you (and hopefully earn some money).
Takeaway
If you’re looking for a way to make money with your talent, try out Medium. It’s not necessarily harder to get your work noticed on Medium than it is on YouTube. But if you’re a content creator, and want to make money from your work, then it’s better to focus on creating quality content that people enjoy reading for an audience. You might not get a huge following but you’ll definitely get the money.
Alright, enough writing. Let’s end this here and move forward with getting paid for our work.
I hope you were able to get some value out of this article and that I see you around!
