The Truth About Happiness and Healing

Radical acceptance is key

“Happiness is not just a place, but also a process.” — Ed Diener

We often forget in this world of instant gratification that everything has its own time and place. We are so eager to get to the other side, of not feeling the pain, of eradicating our struggles that we forget the journey of growth we’ve had so far.

Life throws it’s tests at us to see if we are ready to learn, ready to rise above. But when we try to fight it and resist the emotions, feelings and experiences we are having, it immediately locks out our ability to heal and move through it. We freeze. We tighten. We feel ashamed. We judge our own thoughts.

What if we practice saying yes to everything? To everything that’s arising, to everything that we are feeling in this very moment. What if we simply allow all our thoughts to be there, without trying to change it, fight against it, but simply breathe into it?

“The boundary to what we can accept is the boundary to our freedom.” — Tara Brach

For all of us trying to improve ourselves and overcome limiting mindsets, we often forget the essential component that comes with it — lots of acceptance, compassion and adjustments. Especially if you are a high-achiever like me, we tend to get caught up in feeling, “Haven’t I worked through this before? What is it still happening? Why do I still feel this way?”

This is what I describe as the mind gap of where we want to be and where we are right now. And the only way to move forward is to practice radical acceptance and celebrate our growing awareness. We need to periodically acknowledge the growth we’ve had and celebrate it!

Appreciate your eagerness to learn, grow and change. Keep a list of your past challenges and how you’ve overcome them. Draw on the innate resources and strength you have, and remind yourself of your own greatness! Record and create a list of ‘What has helped you and when’. Good news, it will expand as you grow and expand yourself, and it becomes your own list of resources to tap into.

It’s easy to fall back into old patterns and ruminate in the realm of fears and anxieties. But once we practice tapping into our own resources and leaning into the present moment of being and accepting, we stop giving away our precious power and energy to false, limiting beliefs!

“Clearly recognizing what is happening inside us, and regarding what we see with an open, kind and loving heart, is what I call Radical Acceptance.” — Tara Brach

Stop chasing for a final destination or end goal of happiness and freedom. Because in this very moment, it’s available for us if we are open to it. The truth is, life is not going to never bother us again, but if we accept, adjust and appreciate in this moment, we will find it a lot easier to move forward.
