If you live and breathe marketing and you have a pulse you know who Gary Vaynerchuk of VaynerMedia is.

His messages flood out into the world and they are a glorious sight for my eyes and music to my ears. I’ll drink Gary’s Kool-Aid any day of the week.

Here are five quotes Gary has shared that motivate me. They get me running and ready to tackle any task that is put before me. Especially in periods where my productivity is lacking.

“Look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself: What do I want to do every for the rest of my life? …Do that!”

Probably one of the most powerful messages I’ve ever heard. You’re life really changes when you put a message like that into perspective.

For me, I used the fear from my first brush with mortality as a motivator. When I felt a lump beneath my left ear, I was beyond scared. It’s not until you get that first brush with your mortality that you realize your time here is limited.

It could be over at any moment. That will wake you up from your lack of productivity slumber. That fear is the realization that you need to stop putting off what you want out of life. You have so much to do. The time is now!

“Wake up before everybody else and work into the night. Hustle”

Gary talks about this frequently! If you’re working from 9:00 to 5:00 p.m. what are you doing from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.? If you want something. If you want it bad enough then you need to work for it!

Whatever you’re good at. Whatever you’re passionate about, consider that for your side hustle. This is your opportunity to make your mark in the world and a chance for you to have some creative and professional freedom. Before you know it your side hustle could become your full-time gig.

“It’s more important to learn and fail than it is to always be right.”

We often associate fear with failure. We’re afraid something won’t work out. It takes courage to learn from a mistake. These are opportunities to learn and grow. There is great bravery when going into uncharted waters. Failure can give way to an adventure where your next success is right around the corner.

“Stop saying you have a ‘small following.’ Just say you have a following.”

We are always playing a numbers game. For some reason, we feel acceptance when we have a mass of thousands of followers. Like that somehow validates us.

If you have ONE person taking in your content, then you have a following. And you never know if your words or actions have had an impact on someone. How you can change a life. Honestly, it’s a spider effect from there. Your message passes through one and then they pass that on to another and so on. That’s pretty powerful.

“Putting out great content is always the right idea.”

A good book that you can’t put down. A song with a beautiful melody and lyrics that make an impact once it hits your ears. A film or television show where we can unplug and forget about our latest worry for a few minutes or a few hours.

Sights and sounds help pull us through tough times.

Content tends to show up at the right place at the right time — just when we need it. This is why creating pieces that can reach and inspire someone is so important. And why I love content so much.

That’s why it’s such an important medium.
