What is a Medium publication?

One piece of advice from self-proclaimed Medium gurus you should listen to is to create your Medium publication like I have.

My most-read story was from my own Medium Publication it made me over $1,800. Yes!

Like any true beginner, I listened to every piece of advice I read on how to make money on Medium. But, unfortunately, one of the most common pieces of advice given to new writers or beginners is to submit your story to big Medium publications.

And I mean big, as big as how Julia Roberts said it in Pretty Woman, and like in the film, it was a big mistake.

Because what if you don’t get accepted in these Medium publications? Does it mean you will stop your Medium journey as a writer altogether? When you can publish your first story by self-publishing.

It was a time of weakness. I needed to be validated that I am a writer, just like everyone else. While English isn’t my first language, I can tell stories as good, if not even better, as anyone else here. But all I did was think of how I could contribute to publications.

The first sign that it isn’t the be-all and end-all to be successful in Medium.com as a writer is when I wrote an important story about accessibility, and I can’t find a home for the story.

Every single publication I submitted rejected the story.

While I can take rejections — rejection is indeed the big bad wolf out to eat you alive when it hits you on a bad day.

Thanks for sending in your story! We’re going to pass on this one. The topic just didn’t quite resonate this time around. We get a lot in so have to be selective. But keep writing us! We appreciate you. Cheers, *****.

Things have changed on Medium, if you haven’t noticed, that is why we see a lot of “big-time” writers here complaining about everything.
