Dear Hillary Clinton,
Gerard Mclean here, from Englewood, Ohio, about ten miles north of Dayton. This is the eightieth letter of one hundred I am writing you on health care; one for each day between your nomination and your election. The previous letters can be found in your USPS mailbox or online at 100HRC.com.
On October 11, 2016 Sarah Kliff at Vox wrote an article about the hole that still remains in the Affordable Care Act. It’s a good read, but incomplete. She states the two choices we have are either paying more or scaling back. As older Americans, we are now being forced into a third option; dropping insurance altogether and embracing our mortality.
It’s not a fun thing to think about, but after having raised two kids, paid for two degrees at Ohio universities and starting a company that can sustain them at least if they need it, we older folks find ourselves living in an America that no longer wants or needs us.
The Great Recession made sure that the “dead wood” was pruned from the Tree of Liberty. If we didn’t have our own gig going before the Great Recession, we are now unemployable and soon to be quite uninsurable.
There are flaws in the ACA. After six years of faith, we are starting to lose our religion. That’s the real story. We paid it forward, trusting our government; we supported the Democrats for the ACA and they left us out here to die.
Maybe at my age, maybe I’ve already done enough…
We need SinglePayer, MedicareForAll, UniversalCare now. We really are running out of time.
