Discipline, Consistency, And Unstoppable

The other day I ran into an old college buddy of mine. It had been years since we have talked or seen each other. At first, I almost didn’t know him. His appearance was very different from what I remembered. In college, he was very outgoing and full of enthusiasm for life. Now he looked almost defeated.

We exchanged our pleasantries and talked about how things were going. Roger finally broke down and said things were not going to well with him. He had just lost his job and he felt life was not treating him fair.

I suggested we walk over to a restaurant by the river walk area and grab a bite to eat my treat. Roger agreed and we walked and talked along the way. We ordered our food and took a table overlooking the river.

While we waited I asked Roger a question? I said Roger you see the river there is a story about it if few people know. Roger responded what is that. The river has qualities much as we have. Roger asked what are those qualities?

Roger, you see the river is consistent always moving forward no matter what the weather or season. The river is also determined nothing will stop it from flowing downstream. If a rock stands in its way it will find a way to continue over or around it.

The river is determined to do what it is meant to regardless of the circumstances. The most important thing the river is unstoppable if something gets in its way it naturally finds a way around the obstacle to continue flowing downstream. I guess you could say the river if it were a person has developed discipline in all it does.

Roger thank me for telling him the story of the river. He said I had forgotten how much I am like the river. Your words have given me hope for better days ahead.

We finished our lunch and promise to keep in touch and I promise to help him with his search for another job.
